He's doing what most singers do, showing off his chops. The song and whatever interpretative skills he may possess take a backseat. Tom Jones made a career out of that approach, predominantly with inferior material. That's why I much prefer Tony Bennett, Frank, Sassy, Nat, Ray, Mr. B and Merle Haggard.
