As I gaze from my window
At the moon in its flight
My thoughts all stray to you
In the still of the night
While the world is in slumber
Oh, the times without number
Do you love me as I love you
Or you might lie to be my dream come true
Or will this dream of mine fade out of sight
Like the moon growing dim on the rim of the hill
In the chill still of the night
Do you love me as I love you
Or you might lie to be my dream come true
Or will this dream of mine fade out of sight
Like the moon growing dim on the rim of the hill
In the chill still of the night
The opening lines of Engelbert Humperdinck's song In the still of the night sets an atmospheric and romantic tone. The singer sets the scene, looking out of his window at the moon and thinking of his beloved, whose image takes over his thoughts. The use of the words "still of the night" and "world in slumber" conjures up an image of calmness and peacefulness, accentuating the singer's intense feelings for his love.
As the song continues, the singer wonders if his beloved shares his deep feelings or if he is just a dreamer. The lyrics "Or you might lie to be my dream come true" suggests that the singer is somewhat uncertain and perhaps even anxious about the love being shared. The repeated "Do you love me as I love you" emphasizes this desire for certainty and clarity.
The final lines of the song compares the fading moon to the singer's fading dream of being with his love. The use of the words "rim of the hill" and "chill still of the night" plays with the feelings of melancholy and sadness. The song ends abruptly, leaving the listener to wonder about the outcome of the singer's quest for love.
Overall, the song In the still of the night is a poignant and moving anthem to love and longing. The singer evokes powerful emotions and a sense of vulnerability in his questioning of the sincerity of his love. The use of poetic language and powerful imagery makes this song a classic.
