It Had to Be You

It had to be you
I wandered around and finally found
The somebody who
Could make me be true
Could make me be blue
Or even be glad Just to be sad
Thinking of you
Might never be mean
Might never be cross
Or try to be boss
But they wouldn't do
For nobody else gave me a thrill
With all your faults I love you still
It had to be you, wonderful you
It had to be you
Some others I've seen.
Might never be mean
Might never be cross
Or try to be boss
But they wouldn't do
For nobody else gave me a thrill
With all your faults I love you still
It had to be you, wonderful you
It had to be you
Engelbert Humperdinck's song "It Had To Be You" is a timeless love ballad that speaks to the universality of finding true love. The opening two lines repeat the phrase "It had to be you" continuously, indicating that the person being sung to is undoubtedly special and unique. The lyrics reveal that the singer had been searching for someone for a long time but eventually stumbled upon this person who fulfilled all the requirements that they were looking for in a partner. This person could make them be true, be blue, or even be sad, just thinking of them. The singer acknowledges that there were others that they've seen who might never be mean or cross or try to be a boss, but they wouldn't do. The person being talked about in the song is the only one who gives the singer a thrill, and despite all their faults, they still love them deeply.
The lyrics of this song speak to the idea of how hard it is to find someone who is truly compatible with us. Even if other people might seem perfect, there's something missing. The song expresses that there's someone out there for everyone and when you find that person, it's easy to know that "it had to be you." This idea of soulmates is universal and continues to resonate with audiences across generations.
