Last Of The Romantics
Engelbert Humperdinck Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We're gonna built a home from stone instead of steel
Our love will make it real
It's a cottage down the lane
We'll fill the fireplace with logs and cracklin' sticks
We'll lie near by the bricks as we hear the pristine rain
But 'till we build that home we'll lock our bed room door
Make plans and love within this one room eight by four
I'll never ask for much I'll only ask for more
And as our love is do I'll turn and say to you
We are the last of the romantics
Reaching for love before we lose it to the past
For at the last we are romantic
Free from time and space
We can build a place where all that is romantic can last
So close your eyes and see my clearing in the trees
Your face will feel the breeze and the wind is lace with pine
The sun will rise to where the hills embrace the sky
A stream will wander by like a rolling ball of twine
You must believe I'll make it real I can't say when
But harder times than this have been and even then
A million loves have lived and love lives on again
As long as there are two who say the way we do
We are the last of the romantics
Reaching for love before we lose it to the past
For at the last we are romantic
Free from time and space
We can build a place where all that is romantic can last
We are the last of the romantics
Reaching for love before we lose it to the past
For at the last we are romantic

Free from time and space
We can build a place where all that is romantic can last

Overall Meaning

In the song "Last Of The Romantics," Engelbert Humperdinck sings about a couple who dreams of building a cottage made of stone instead of steel. They believe that this would make their love real and everlasting. To make this dream a reality, they will fill the fireplace with logs and crackling sticks, and they will listen to the raindrops as they fall on the roof. However, until they build the cottage, they will lock themselves in their bedroom to plan and love one another. The singer promises to never ask for much but only asks for more love. He believes that their love will endure, and they will be the last of the romantics.

Throughout the song, the singer is attempting to hold onto the idea of true love and romance. The couple he sings about is trying to build a place where love can endure and last forever. He believes that they are among the last of the romantics, reaching for love before it is lost to the past. The singer's goal is to prove that even in a world where love seems to be fleeting, there are still those who believe in it.

I think Engelbert could just have the best quality of voice and control of any male singer in popular recorded music history. What do you think?

@zebop

One of the best, no question--especially around this era. The only issue with Engelbert is the song choices--but on this song, he got very lucky and we did too, it's a career performance.

Песня и пение прекрасны !!! Какой голос замечательный !!! Я слушаю песни Энгельберта каждый день !

@jozperp.301

The songwriter, Rupert Holmes, did an amazing job with the lyrics. Especially the way he used the word "last" in three different forms, three different meanings.
