I dreamed a dream one day
And now that dream is here beside me
Long the skies were overcast
But now the clouds have passed
You're here at last
Aladdin's lamp is mine
The dream I dreamed was not denied me
Just one look and then I knew
That all I longed for long ago was you
Chills run up and down my spine
Aladdin's lamp is mine
The dream I dreamed was not denied me
Just one look and then I knew
That all I longed for long ago was you
Engelbert Humperdinck's "Long Ago" is a song about the fulfillment of a long-awaited dream. The first verse sets the stage for the song's theme; the singer reflects on a dream he had and how it has now become a reality. He expresses joy and gratitude that the dream he once had is now "beside" him. The second verse continues the celebration– the rain has stopped and the sun is shining, and the person he has been waiting for has finally shown up.
The chorus is the climax of the song. The singer describes the physical sensation of excitement that he feels, like "chills run[ning] up and down [his] spine." The metaphor of Aladdin's lamp is a powerful one; it speaks to the magical power of dreams and the potential for wishes to be granted. Finally, the last two lines of the chorus brings the song to its emotional peak. The singer sees the person he has been waiting for and realizes that they are what he has been longing for all along.
Overall, Engelbert Humperdinck's "Long Ago" portrays the joy and fulfillment of finally achieving a long-awaited dream. The song is filled with hope and optimism and beautifully captures the sensation of dreaming and realizing a goal.
