You're so like the lady with the mystic smile
Is it only cause you're lonely they have blamed you
For that Mona Lisa strangeness in your smile
Do you smile to tempt a lover Mona Lisa?
Or is this your way to hide a broken heart?
Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep
They just lie there, and they die there
Are you warm, are you real Mona Lisa?
Or just a cold and lonely, lovely work of art.
Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa.
The song "A Time for Us" by Engelbert Humperdinck offers a poignant tribute to Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece "Mona Lisa". The lyrics depict "Mona Lisa" as a mysterious woman, reflecting her enigmatic smile and captivating beauty. The singer speaks to her directly, posing questions about her true nature and intentions. He wonders whether she smiles seductively to tempt a lover or uses it as a facade to hide her broken heart. He acknowledges that many people have come to her with dreams, but those dreams have gone unfulfilled, suggesting that Mona Lisa is a distant, unattainable figure.
The song ultimately asks whether Mona Lisa is warm and real or simply a cold and lonely work of art. This reflects the eternal mystery surrounding the painting of Mona Lisa, which has captivated and perplexed viewers for centuries. The song tries to capture the essence of Mona Lisa's enigmatic personality, depicting her as a fascinating and alluring woman, but ultimately one whose true nature remains elusive.
