My Foolish Heart
Engelbert Humperdinck Lyrics

Beware, my foolish heart
How white the ever constant moon
Take care, my foolish heart
There's a line between love and fascination
That's hard to see how many names such as this
For they both have the very same sensation
Her lips are much too close to mine
Beware, my foolish heart
But should our eager lips combine
Then let the fire start
For this time it isn't fascination
Or a dream that will fade and fall apart
It's love; this time it's love
My foolish heart
In Engelbert Humperdinck's song "My Foolish Heart," the singer is warning himself to be careful with his heart, as he recognizes the fine line between love and infatuation. He urges his heart to be cautious of falling too deeply in love with the woman he desires. The looming night and the gleaming moon symbolize the danger of being lost in a romantic fantasy. The singer describes the perilous flexibility and subtlety of love and infatuation. He believes both produce similar feelings, which makes it hard to differentiate between them. However, he is aware that love is just different, as it is genuine and lasting, unlike infatuation that is fleeting and delusional.
Engelbert Humperdinck persuasively projects the internal conflict of the singer between choosing and avoiding romance. He emphasizes the importance of taking care of oneself, especially the heart, when it comes to harboring a relationship. The line "Her lips are much too close to mine" portrays the overwhelming desire to fall in love, but the singer is still cautious about his inclinations. Finally, the song concludes with the singer acknowledging that the current relationship is not an ephemeral infatuation but a genuine love story. The singer reassures his foolish heart that this time what he feels is love.
