My Way
Engelbert Humperdinck Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friends, I'll say it clear
I'll state my case of which I'm certain
I've lived a life that's full
I traveled each and every highway
But more, much more than this
I did it my way
Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption
I planned each chartered course
Each careful step along the byway
But more, much more than this
I did it my way
Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all, when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I faced it all and I stood tall
And did it my way
I've loved, laughed and cried
I've had my fill, my share of losing
And now, as tears subside
I find it all so amusing
To think I did all that
And may I say, not in a shy way
Oh no, no, not me
I did it my way
For what is a man, what has he got
If not himself then he has not
To say all the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels

The record shows, I took the blows
But I did it my way

Overall Meaning

The song "My Way" by Engelbert is a classic anthem of self-determination and personal fulfillment. The lyrics indicate that the singer is approaching the end of his life, and is looking back on the journey he has taken. He makes it clear that he has accomplished things in his life, but he has always done things his own way, without apology.

The references to traveling highways and carefully charting courses indicate that the singer has made deliberate choices in his life, but that he has always done so with confidence and a sense of purpose. The reference to "more, much more than this" suggests that there is a deeper meaning to his life, and that he has found true fulfillment in being true to himself, regardless of the obstacles he has faced.

The song also acknowledges that there have been times when the singer has faced challenges and doubts, but he has always overcome them with strength and determination. He has lived a full life, with its share of joys and sorrows, and now he can look back on it all with amusement.

Overall, "My Way" is a powerful tribute to the idea of individualism and the importance of living life on one's own terms.

That was the song "Strangers in the night" you're referring to.

If I remember the story correctly, in 1966 Engelbert went to Bert Kaempfert's house (in the island of Mallorca in Spain, I think) and Engelbert's team chose two of Kaempfert's songs to record. One was either Wonderland By Night or Spanish Eyes (maybe both, my memory is not that bright) and the other one of course being Strangers in the Night.

Later, when Engelbert already had recorded Strangers in the Night, Sinatra (not Frank himself, his team I suppose, more about this later) took the song and released it as a single before Engelbert's version was released. So they thought "we can't argue with Sinatra" and left it unreleased. For his 50 anniversary CD compilation Engelbert said they tried to find the original tape recording, but couldn't find it. I don't think they ever will.

What's funny is that Sinatra hated the song Strangers in the Night. He was very traditional and that song was too modern and to Pop for his liking. He went on to say it was the worst fucking song he had ever heard, and didn't stop there.

So maybe "Sinatra" stripped Engelbert of his first hit. Maybe he didn't and Engelbert's version wouldn't have been a success. Who cares, since it all worked out for both of them at the end. But I'm dying to hear Engelbert's 1966 recording.
