Release Me
Engelbert Humperdinck Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Please release me, let me go
For I don't love you anymore
To waste our lives would be a sin
Release me and let me love again

I have found a new love, dear
And I will always want her near
Her lips are warm while yours are cold
Release me, darling, let me go

(Please release me, let me go)
For I don't love you anymore
(To waste my life would be a sin)
So release me and let me love again

Please release me, can't you see
You'd be a fool to cling to me
To live our lives would bring us pain
So release me and let me love again
(Let me love, let me go)

Overall Meaning

Engelbert Humperdinck's "Release Me" is a powerful ballad about the end of a romantic relationship. The singer has found a new love and no longer loves the person they are currently with. They are asking for their partner to "release" them so they can move on to a new chapter of their life. The lyrics are full of emotion, with the singer pleading for their partner to let them go so that they can find happiness and live life to the fullest.

The first stanza of the song makes it clear that the singer no longer loves their partner and that staying in the relationship would be a waste of both of their lives. They are asking to be released from the relationship so that they can love again. In the second stanza, the singer emphasizes the differences between their current partner and their new love, saying that their new love's lips are warm while their current partner's are cold. The final stanza is a plea for their partner to see that clinging to the relationship would only bring them pain, and that letting go would allow them to find love and happiness elsewhere.

Overall, "Release Me" is a song about the difficulties of ending a long-term relationship and the pain that comes with moving on. It's a song that has resonated with audiences for decades and continues to be a beloved classic today.

Yesterday, November 4, 2022, I had the opportunity to take my wife to see Engelbert sing live one more time to celebrate our 42nd. anniversary. This great singer, despite having physical problems, has not lost anything of his great voice. Best of all, my wife was thrilled to see her favorite singer so close to her. Time shouldn't go through this kind of stars that make us happy, and at the same time make us dream awake. Let's keep listening to Mr. Engelbert Humperdinck so that he will never be forgotten by the new generations.

Long long time ago I listened to this song and others of EH. I did not pay attention to the words, I was a school kid, listening to the music after school, music recorded by my father..we had tape recorders..remember ?😉.
Today, when I listen to the same song, I hear words perhaps better, but they are still not that relevant, because yet again, like long time ago, these songs are transporting me in the world of dreams...
