Smoke Gets in Your Eyes
Engelbert Humperdinck Lyrics

I of course replied "something here inside cannot be denied"
They said "someday you'll find all who love are blind"
When your heart's on fire, you must realize smoke gets in your eyes
So I *chaffed* them and I gaily laughed to think they could doubt my love
Yet today my love has flown away, I am without my love
Now laughing friends deride tears I cannot hide
So I smile and say "when a lovely flame dies, smoke gets in your eyes"
(smoke gets in your eyes, smoke gets in your eyes)
Smoke-gets-in-your-EYES
The song "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" by Engelbert Humperdinck is a romantic ballad that speaks about the fleeting nature of love and how it can often leave us with bitter memories. The song opens with the singer being asked how he knew his true love was real. He responds by saying that he can feel it inside him, and that it cannot be denied. However, some of his friends tell him that love is blind, and he will eventually find out.
The chorus of the song resonates with the theme of the song, as it states that when your heart is on fire, you must realize that smoke gets in your eyes. The singer seems to be acknowledging the impermanence of love and the fact that it can sometimes leave us with painful memories. He later goes on to say that he laughed off his friend's doubts about his love, but now that he has lost his love, he is without hope. His laughing friends now ridicule him and he struggles to hide his tears. He concludes the song by saying that when a lovely flame dies, smoke gets in your eyes.
Overall, Engelbert Humperdinck's rendition of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" is a poignant reflection on the joys and sorrows of love. The lyrics speak of the deep emotional connections that we share with one another, but also acknowledges the inevitable pain that comes when love is lost.

"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"
They asked me how I knew
My true love was true
I of course replied
Something here inside
Can not be denied
They, said some day you'll find
All who love are blind
When your heart's on fire
You must realize
Smoke gets in your eyes
So I chaffed them, and I gaily laughed
To think they could doubt my love
And yet today, my love has flown away
I am without my love
Now laughing friends deride
Tears I cannot hide
So I smile and say
When a lovely flame dies
Smoke gets in your eyes
Smoke gets in your eyes
