Don't try to forget, you and I never met
And before you fly, why can't you tell me why
You've forgotten all the words that you once said
Long as I've got you there beside me
Long as you're there to stand a guide me
The love we share, no one can ever tear apart
Long as it's you, the love I'm with then
I'll keep on callin' you sweetheart
If my love for you can't make you happy
Just open the door and you won't see me anymore
And before you fly, why can't you tell me why
You've forgotten all the words that you once said
Long as I've got you there beside me
Long as you're there to stand a guide me
The love we share, no one can ever tear apart
Long as I've got this life I'm living
Long as it's you, the love I'm with then
I'll keep on callin' you sweetheart
I'll keep on callin' you sweetheart
In Engelbert Humperdinck's song "Sweetheart," the singer expresses his love for his significant other and vows to call her his sweetheart as long as she is by his side. However, he also acknowledges that if she decides to leave him, he will have no choice but to move on. He asks that before she flies away, she should tell him why she has forgotten all the words she once said to him. He also suggests that if his love cannot make her happy, she should simply open the door and he will leave.
The song showcases the complexity of relationships and how they can sometimes become uncertain. The singer loves his sweetheart deeply but realizes that he cannot force her to stay with him. He is willing to let her go if it means she will be happier without him. The use of the word "sweetheart" throughout the lyrics emphasizes the love and affection that the singer has for his partner.
Overall, the message of the song is that love can be challenging and vulnerable, but it is important to cherish every moment and treat the loved one with respect and understanding. It contains a timeless message of love and devotion that resonates with audiences to this day.

I saw this man in concert in 1984 and saw him 30 years later and he was perfection in both concerts. The comment "another great song written by the Bee Gees done by a magic voice" says it all!! Started listening to him in the early 70's and his CD The Man I Want to Be is fantastic.
