When There's No You
Engelbert Humperdinck Lyrics

And night becomes another dawn
It's only heartaches that I meet
And tears that tell me you have gone from me
Is it hard to see that my heart is breaking
It was yours for the taking
You said we're through
This kind of lonliness I found
Has taken over in my mind
And it will always be around
For love like ours, I'll never find, I know
Did you have to go cause my heart is breaking
It was yours for the taking
You said we're through
What can I do when there's no you
My heart is breaking
It was yours for the taking
You said we're through
What can I do when there's no you
The lyrics to Engelbert Humperdinck’s “When There’s No You” center around the theme of heartbreak and loneliness after a breakup. The singer paints a desolate picture of walking along an empty street as night becomes dawn, and experiencing only heartaches and tears since the person he loved has departed. He expresses his agony over the split and his inability to cope with the void that the other person leaves behind. He conveys the depth of his feelings and how hard it is to accept and move on from a love that was once so strong.
The lyrics convey a melancholic tone, and the singer’s voice is soft and mournful. The repetition of the line “what can I do when there’s no you” underscores the despair and hopelessness of his situation. The chorus is a refrain of sorts, with the singer lamenting the fact that the one he loved is no longer with him. He is adrift and lost without the love he once had. The song’s instrumentation is understated, with only a few key instruments playing throughout, which allows Humperdinck’s voice to take center stage.
Overall, “When There’s No You” is a heartbreaking song that speaks to the fragility of love and how painful it can be when it comes to an end. The lyrics are relatable to anyone who has gone through a similar experience, and Humperdinck delivers them with sincerity and emotion.
