Callas Went Away
Enigma Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Callas went away
But her voice forever stay
Callas went away

She went away

Ah! je les relis sans cesse
Je devais les detruire
Ces lettres! Ces lettres!
(Ah! I read them constantly
I ought to destroy them
These letters! These letters!)

God bless you

Overall Meaning

The song "Callas Went Away" by Enigma contains some complex lyrics that appear to be dealing with themes such as loss, memories, and regret. The repeated line "Callas went away" refers to the renowned opera singer Maria Callas, who died in 1977. The line "But her voice forever stay" indicates that although Callas may no longer be alive, her legacy lives on through her music. This could represent the idea that even after we die, our impact on the world can remain.

The following lines are spoken in French: "Ah! je les relis sans cesse / Je devais les detruire / Ces lettres! Ces lettres!" In English, this translates to "Ah! I read them constantly / I ought to destroy them / These letters! These letters!" This suggests that the singer is struggling with letting go of a past relationship or memory, as they keep revisiting old letters and feel conflicted about whether to destroy them or not. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for holding onto emotional baggage and the difficulty of moving on from the past.

Overall, the lyrics of "Callas Went Away" convey a feeling of nostalgia and loss, but also the idea that memories and legacies can endure beyond our physical lives.

1992. I was 15 when I did my first enigma Album. Best trip like. Now each album is a time travelling destination express. Helps my mind see different angles of the same problems/obstacles in the path I be on at times.

I don't care what year it is. I'd rather be listening to this than the garbage they call modern music today.
