Return to Innocence
Enigma Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love
Devotion
Feeling
Emotion

Don't be afraid to be weak
Don't be too proud to be strong
Just look into your heart my friend
That will be the return to yourself
The return to innocence

The return to innocence

And if you want, then start to laugh
If you must, then start to cry
Be yourself don't hide
Just believe in destiny

Don't care what people say
Just follow your own way
Don't give up and use the chance
To return to innocence

That's not the beginning of the end
That's the return to yourself
The return to innocence

That's return to innocence

Overall Meaning

Enigma's "Return to Innocence" is a reflective and introspective song that urges listeners to embrace their true selves by exploring their emotional vulnerability. The opening lines of the song - "love, devotion, feeling, and emotion" - set the tone for the rest of the lyrics that encourage people to live from the heart, to let go of fear and pride, and to trust their own destiny. The song communicates that it's natural to experience a range of emotions, including weakness and strength, laughter and tears, and that people should embrace their full range of feelings as part of their personal journey. The message behind the song is that embracing one's true self is not the end but the beginning, the beginning of a new chapter where people can return to their innocence, to their purest form, to an authentic state of being.

Overall, the song encourages listeners to follow their own path, unencumbered by what others may say or think, and to use any challenges that come along as opportunities to grow closer to their authentic selves. Enigma's "Return to Innocence" is a reminder that the most precious thing a person can possess is their own personal power to live their life as they see fit. And, when they return to their true selves, they gain an insurmountable strength and clarity that will help them face anything that comes their way.

Please tell me you're joking. You're joking, right? Look, i don't want to ruin the happy feeling you get from this song because it is a good song. But you might want to be careful what you invest your heart and soul into. Here's a little fact you should know about this song...
That beautiful yodeling sound that you hear, which you and everyone else thinks is so spiritual and lofty and gives you goosebumps ... it was actually an un-compensated audio recording - made by the French Government and stolen by Enigma - of a husband and wife farming couple SINGING A DRINKING BAR SONG in Taiwan!!!
The couple were an Austronesian indigenous Taiwanese couple, named Difang and Igay Duana, who were singing the Ami Drinking Song (which is also variously called the “Amis Palang song”, "Weeding and Paddyfield Song No. 1", "Elders' Drinking Song", "Jubilant Drinking Song", or “Sapiliepah a Radiw” in the Amis language), which has about as much spirituality as the ice cube at the bottom of your 5th glass of bourbon.

Difang and Igay were never paid ANY royalties for the song while it was blasting from everyone's radios & record players & cassette players & CD players around the globe - even after it was used as the theme song for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta!!!

In the late 90s, when neighbors of the couple asked them if they knew that the recording of their voices was a mega hit all over the world, raking in MILLIONS of dollars, the news stunned the couple who had virtually no idea.

They sought legal representation, and Enigma and EMI Records were sued for stealing the hook to the song, and they were found guilty. They paid Difang some crap money in a crappy out-of-court settlement under an agreement that there would be no punishment and no further payments. And now everyone has emotional, spiritual, life-changing memories ... from a drunken bar song.
