L'altra madre

E ti nascondi;
Domani accada quel che accada.
E' già così lontano il mondo,
Ma tra un istante dormirò,
Con l'altra madre che io ho.
Non c'è risposta né perché,
Ma solo voglia e crampi
Alla mattina col caffè;
Fuori di casa inciampi subito
Nella caccia al tesoro, ma c'è
Quella medesima domanda.
E un caldo dolcemente sale
Come una bianca funivia,
Che ti percorre
Come un lontano carnevale.
Era così veloce il mondo,
Io non avevo fretta no:
Un'altra madre aspetta,
C'è un'altra madre io ho.
Si ferma il tempo sulla strada
Per tutto il tempo che vorrai
E ti nascondi;
Domani accada qual che accada.
E' già così lontano il mondo,
Ma tra un istante dormirò
Con l'altra madre che io ho
The song "L'altra madre" by Enrico Ruggeri is a deeply introspective piece of music that reflects on the passing of time and the fleeting nature of our existence. The lyrics paint a picture of a person who is watching their life pass them by as they travel along the same railway track, day in and day out. This repetitive motion is what gives color and vibrancy to their world, but it is also what has led them to forget who they truly are. Although they cannot go back in time, they have no desire to do so, for they know that they have nothing to gain from revisiting their past. Instead, they continue on this lonely journey, searching for something that they cannot find.
As the song progresses, the singer begins to contemplate the meaning of their existence. They question why they are here and what it is they truly want out of life. They are plagued by a sense of restlessness and a feeling that something is missing, but they cannot articulate what it is they are searching for. They are haunted by the same question every morning when they wake up: "What am I looking for?" Despite this, there is a sense of peace that permeates the song. The singer is accepting of their fate and is content to spend their days in quiet reflection.
One of the most powerful lines in the entire song is "Con l'altra madre che io ho" ("With the other mother I have"). This line is open to interpretation, but it is generally believed to refer to death. The singer seems to have accepted their mortality and is looking forward to the day they will meet their "other mother". It is a poignant reminder that life is fleeting and that we should cherish every moment we have.

Un altro giorno passa via e ti ritrovi ancora
Yet another day goes by and you find yourself again
Lungo la stessa ferrovia
Along the same railway
Che ti colora il mondo e gli attimi,
That colors your world and moments,
Come il fuoco di paglia che dà
Like a flash in the pan,
Il calore che ti avvolge.
The warmth that surrounds you.
Non puoi tornare indietro più,
You can't go back anymore,
Nemmeno lo vorresti.
Even if you wanted to.
Non ti ricordi chi sei tu,
You don't remember who you are,
Ma non avresti niente in cambio;
But you wouldn't have anything in return;
no,
no,
Tu non avresti nemmeno la gente
You wouldn't even have the people
Che trovi nella notte.
That you find at night.
Si ferma il tempo sulla strada
Time stops on the road
Per tutto il tempo che vorrai
For as long as you want
E ti nascondi;
And you hide;
Domani accada quel che accada.
Tomorrow, whatever happens, happens.
E' già così lontano il mondo,
The world is already so far away,
Ma tra un istante dormirò,
But in a moment, I'll sleep,
Con l'altra madre che io ho.
With the other mother I have.
Non c'è risposta né perché,
There's no answer or why,
Ma solo voglia e crampi
But only desire and cramps
Alla mattina col caffè;
In the morning with coffee;
Fuori di casa inciampi subito
As soon as you step out of the house,
Nella caccia al tesoro, ma c'è
In the treasure hunt, but there is
Quella medesima domanda.
That same question.
E un caldo dolcemente sale
And a warm feeling slowly rises,
Come una bianca funivia,
Like a white cable car,
Che ti percorre
That runs through you
Come un lontano carnevale.
Like a distant carnival.
Era così veloce il mondo,
The world was so fast,
Io non avevo fretta no:
I wasn't in a rush, no:
Un'altra madre aspetta,
Another mother waits,
C'è un'altra madre io ho.
I have another mother.
