The Appeal & the Mindsweep I
Enter Shikari Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is an appeal to the struggling and striving stakeholders of this planet
This floating rock we call Earth

Alas, that means you

That means
Everyone of your acquaintance
Every figure your eyes skim past in the street
Every charlatan still to defeat
Every tender face you find solace in
Now mimic the mindset William Wallace was in

Dismount - disembark - descend from your existence
Slacken your angst and decant your hate
'Cos in the long run they're about as useful
As pouring acid onto your dinner plate

To muzzled masses that lead lives of deafening desperation
With Excalibur aloft King Arthur earned the throne
But it's our minds we got to wrench out of the stone

Don't be fooled by its simplicity
There was never a broadcast made of such urgency
'Cos at no time before us
Did we grasp the scope of this emergency?

Ladle out love and logic by the boatload
Equipped with that cargo you can take any road
Now grab life; seize time
This fight is for human kind

I am a mindsweeper
Focus on me
I am a mindsweeper
Focus on me, I will read your mind

I dart through rapids; through streams of thought
Then suddenly I started losing my mind
Catapulting through the uncharted
I could no longer tell if these were your thoughts or mine

And if was as if I held a mirror up to my soul
And if was as if I held a mirror up to my soul

Who was the author?
And who was the observer?
For at the last analysis our thoughts coalesced

Your are not alone

Your are not alone

You have entered volatile territory
You have started a journey; you're part of this story
And this, this was just a glimpse, just a glimpse

You've no idea what you've got yourself into
You've no idea what you've got yourself into

I am a mindsweeper
Focus on me

I am a mindsweeper
Focus on me, on me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Enter Shikari's song The Appeal & the Mindsweep I are an appeal to humanity as a whole, asking them to pay attention to the urgent emergency at hand, which is the state of the planet we call home. The lyrics call on all of us, from the struggling to the prosperous, to pay attention to the world around us, to step back from our difficulties, anger, and frustration and instead fill ourselves with love and logic. This could lead us down any path, including the path towards activism and trying to make a difference.

The interlude in the middle of the song, where the singer discusses the idea of the mindsweeper, speaks to the idea of losing oneself in one's own thoughts and in the struggle to understand the issues at hand. The singer is a mindsweeper, darting through streams of thought and running the risk of losing one's mind in the process, but it is necessary to keep going, digging deeper and deeper into the issue.

The overarching message of The Appeal & the Mindsweep I is an important one, urging us to realize the urgency of the situation and to work together to make a difference.

I may have been a temporary mindsweeper back in 2012 for a brief moment of time. This all-knowing mindset lasted for a few minutes. I was laid down in bed thinking about thinking. Re-arranging the 'furniture' of my mind. I had a perfect belief which is super responsible for figuring out stuff I wouldn't be able to figure out without doing that. My belief system was factually perfect till 'someone' deliberately and tactically put false thoughts (un-truths) in their head. When I observed these untruths, it fractured my fundamental beliefs which de-arranged the furniture of my mind and threw me off-track, and off my 'surfboard' of my mind. I could no longer think of all possibilities at once anymore but it left me extremely wise ;) Not all the 'furniture' was 'touched' making me able to pick up on a rule of nature in everything I observed. Like Pythagoras did when he first worked out the Pythagoras theorem.
Now 10 years later my intelligence doesn't seem as strong as it used to be :( Problems in the material world grew on me as I got older. These problems would always 'coincidentally' divert me away from my previous mindset, making me focus on certain things that were polar-opposite to how I arranged the rest of my untouched 'furniture' as if it was intentional, making me more stupid. Until I ended up thinking like everyone else. This may also be deliberate as if a group of mysterious people have built the system this way as they don't want others to have this all-knowing mindset, or even get close to building this mindset. They want to be the ones who can monitor therefore control it all.

I wish I knew what this phenomena was. Was it just my imagination and I was crazy? Back in 2012 was I the author or the observer? Or both (making me temporarily crazy)?
When I first heard this song in 2015 I understood the lyrics as if I could have written it. I knew it was exactly referring to me somehow (and potentially others too). I'm sure Rou crafted these lyrics from his similar experience. When you eventually read this, You were not alone ;)

Good song too :D
p.s I've been a fan of Enter Shikari since around 2007.
