Entombed's debut album was Left Hand Path, a cult favorite that established the band as a popular death metal band. The follow-up, Clandestine, was just as popular. These first two albums were unique in that they featured what was sometimes referred to as a "chainsaw" guitar sound which became a staple of Swedish death metal worldwide. It was created using the Boss Heavy Metal distortion pedal and a Peavey amplifier. This iconic guitar tone spawned the niche sub-genre referred to as 'entombedcore' which consists of just hardcore bands using the infamous chainsaw tone as part of their sound.
After the Gods of Grind tour, Entombed began changing their sound into a mix of groove metal, hard rock and death metal frequently called death n roll. Although this may have turned off many fans, it established their mainstream and critical reputation. Wolverine Blues and Hollowman are widely considered classics of early 1990s death metal, but were followed by problems with various record companies.
In 1999, Entombed released Uprising, which was an anti-commercial return to the band's roots. The follow-up, Morning Star returned to Hollowman and Wolverine Blues style metal. They have since released 2003's album Inferno, a continuation of the 'death n roll' style that has become their trademark sound.
2006 saw the release of new music from Entombed, with the When in Sodom EP on June 6 (or 06/06/06), and the full length album Serpent Saints - The Ten Amendments was released on July 9th, 2007. This album is the group's first release with drummer Olle Dahlstedt (of Alpha Safari and ex-Misery Loves Co.), who replaced long-time drummer Peter Stjärnvind in 2006.

Entombed Lyrics

No way to please them all
Have had a go
It just felt so small
Can't wait forever for someone to tuck you in
With no good name to lose you have everything to win
When bad it's still OK
I'm just glad when it comes my way
Reached up to "god"
The guy in control and said
"Hey man, listen let's settle this once and for all"
Sometimes silence, he said, is my way of saying no
But look twice and you're told everything in what I show
The lyrics of Entombed's song "Boats" reflect the singer's inner reflections on his pursuit of money and his experiences of success and failure. The first verse indicates that he went after money, but couldn't please everyone, and that despite having given it a try, he found it unfulfilling. The second verse talks about the need to take risks and make a name for oneself, as waiting for others to validate one's efforts may not be the best strategy.
The chorus seems to suggest that the singer takes life as it comes and tries to find something to appreciate in both good and bad times. In the third verse, the singer describes reaching out to "God" and seeking a resolution to his inner turmoil. The response he gets is not a direct answer, but rather a hint that sometimes silence speaks more than words. The singer then interprets this message as a way of indicating that the truth is already there, but one needs to pay attention to see it.
Overall, the lyrics of "Boats" demonstrate a sense of disillusionment with the pursuit of money and material success. The singer seems to have learned that there is more to life than just accumulating wealth, and that striving for a good name and taking risks may be a more fulfilling path to follow.
