Entombed's debut album was Left Hand Path, a cult favorite that established the band as a popular death metal band. The follow-up, Clandestine, was just as popular. These first two albums were unique in that they featured what was sometimes referred to as a "chainsaw" guitar sound which became a staple of Swedish death metal worldwide. It was created using the Boss Heavy Metal distortion pedal and a Peavey amplifier. This iconic guitar tone spawned the niche sub-genre referred to as 'entombedcore' which consists of just hardcore bands using the infamous chainsaw tone as part of their sound.
After the Gods of Grind tour, Entombed began changing their sound into a mix of groove metal, hard rock and death metal frequently called death n roll. Although this may have turned off many fans, it established their mainstream and critical reputation. Wolverine Blues and Hollowman are widely considered classics of early 1990s death metal, but were followed by problems with various record companies.
In 1999, Entombed released Uprising, which was an anti-commercial return to the band's roots. The follow-up, Morning Star returned to Hollowman and Wolverine Blues style metal. They have since released 2003's album Inferno, a continuation of the 'death n roll' style that has become their trademark sound.
2006 saw the release of new music from Entombed, with the When in Sodom EP on June 6 (or 06/06/06), and the full length album Serpent Saints - The Ten Amendments was released on July 9th, 2007. This album is the group's first release with drummer Olle Dahlstedt (of Alpha Safari and ex-Misery Loves Co.), who replaced long-time drummer Peter StjΓ€rnvind in 2006.

Contempt
Entombed Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Nothing but lies
I cannot believe the scenes
Taking place beneath our skies
It makes me want to do my time
In a song or on the silver-screen
Humanity is the biggest cancer
Before my eyes, lies
Civiliesation
Ancient and wicked
Destruction in creation
No matter how low you are
There's always someone to look down upon
And it goes "FUCKIN'"
On and on
Emotionless, obscene
But a human life don't mean
Anything to me
It's merely a seed of insanity
Emotionless, obscene
But a human life don't mean
Anything to me
It's merely a seed of insanity
The lyrics to Entombed's song Contempt convey a deep sense of despair towards humanity and its actions. The opening lines of "Before my eyes, lies, nothing but lies" suggest that the singer is witnessing something that they find difficult to believe. The subsequent lines reinforce this disbelief as the singer observes the destruction and decay of civilization. They see the horrors of humanity and describe it as if it were a cancer, the worst ever seen. The irony is that civilization supposes to have brought about development, and yet it has brought about devastation.
The second stanza continues with a sense of hopelessness as the lyrics describe how humanity is not only destroying the world but also itself. The line "No matter how low you are, there's always someone to look down upon" speaks to the human condition of power and dominance, where even in the depths of depravity, there is always someone to be subjugated. The repeated use of the word "FUCKIN'" conveys a sense of anger and frustration, reinforcing the idea that there is seemingly no escape from the destruction of civilization and humanity.
The final stanza uses the phrase "emotionless, obscene" to describe how disconnected the singer is from the human experience. The phrase "a human life don't mean anything to me, it's merely a seed of insanity" reiterates the idea that the singer has lost faith in humanity and its potential for good. The contempt the singer feels towards humanity is palpable, and the lyrics illustrate a deep-seated frustration in the face of so much destruction and negativity.
