Crawl
Entombed Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Father set me free from this altar of death
Dead fingers cold as ice touches my flesh
As it passed through my soul and body
The fear I thought was gone grows
Tears of regret and confusion
This is not what I wanted to know

I have embraced the truth
Beyond lies where honesty reigns
I thought I gave my life
But back I was only given pain

I once stood at the threshold of my desire
Losing ground now I'm this horrid truth's denier

The nocturnal hour is passed
Here nothing can last
I sought and screamed in pain
But there was nothing to gain
Nihility arise from the bottom of no lies
From here to eternity I just can be set free

Father help me die away from reality
My arms and legs are bound
Please grant me mortality

I'm losing it
Crawling upon these white walls of truth
For the darkest cold I've wasted my entire youth
I'm crawling down

The dirt that I licked off my mind
The truth you'll never want to find

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Entombed's song "Crawl" depict a desperate plea for escape from a life that has become a torturous existence. The "altar of death" is a metaphor for the struggles and pains of everyday life that seem to suffocate the singer. The first part of the song deals with the singer's struggle to come to terms with his realities. The mention of his father in the opening lines could be interpreted as a spiritual image, with the singer seeking guidance from a higher power.

As the song progresses, however, the truth that the singer strives to uncover gradually becomes unbearable, leading to the realization that there may be no escape from the pain he feels. The lines, "I sought and screamed in pain, but there was nothing to gain, Nihility arise from the bottom of no lies," suggest that all efforts to find meaning and solace in the world have been in vain.

The final lines, "Father help me die away from reality, my arms and legs are bound, please grant me mortality," could be seen as a cry for release from the cage that the singer feels trapped within. It could be interpreted as the character feeling that death would be a better alternative to their current existence.

Overall, the song conveys a deep sense of despair by painting a picture of a person whose life has become so unbearable that they have lost all hope for a better tomorrow.

One of the greatest albums ever?! I think so, fucking class!

@gergelyfliegauf5287

Somehow this relaxes me, it so smooth, so perfect, so mature, so cool, so easygoing.

@assurdo8888

In the early '90's, for a period i used to "cradle" myself listening to Deicide's "Legion", in bed at night, to fall asleep easierly. AUTHENTIC . . . And yes, songs from "Clandestine", among other d.m. masterpieces, somehow relax me, but only if i don't exceed a given time of listening, otherwise the overwhelming, aggressive sound can get me nervous . . .

Reminds me of an old prostitute I used to date.

@blakestormcrow6275

The lyrics you posted, and others say "Father help me die away from reality", and yet the actual lyrics say "Satan". Am I the only one who hears this?

@assurdo8888

@@blakestormcrow6275 yes, but in the lyrics sheet of the original press (and prolly of the latter presses) there is written "father". More, it's "for the darkest void", not "cold".
