Entombed's debut album was Left Hand Path, a cult favorite that established the band as a popular death metal band. The follow-up, Clandestine, was just as popular. These first two albums were unique in that they featured what was sometimes referred to as a "chainsaw" guitar sound which became a staple of Swedish death metal worldwide. It was created using the Boss Heavy Metal distortion pedal and a Peavey amplifier. This iconic guitar tone spawned the niche sub-genre referred to as 'entombedcore' which consists of just hardcore bands using the infamous chainsaw tone as part of their sound.
After the Gods of Grind tour, Entombed began changing their sound into a mix of groove metal, hard rock and death metal frequently called death n roll. Although this may have turned off many fans, it established their mainstream and critical reputation. Wolverine Blues and Hollowman are widely considered classics of early 1990s death metal, but were followed by problems with various record companies.
In 1999, Entombed released Uprising, which was an anti-commercial return to the band's roots. The follow-up, Morning Star returned to Hollowman and Wolverine Blues style metal. They have since released 2003's album Inferno, a continuation of the 'death n roll' style that has become their trademark sound.
2006 saw the release of new music from Entombed, with the When in Sodom EP on June 6 (or 06/06/06), and the full length album Serpent Saints - The Ten Amendments was released on July 9th, 2007. This album is the group's first release with drummer Olle Dahlstedt (of Alpha Safari and ex-Misery Loves Co.), who replaced long-time drummer Peter Stjärnvind in 2006.

Lights Out
Entombed Lyrics

There's a body on the tracks, but you're trying not to care
Sensationally wicked it roars on through in the night
"Look mom that body's got no head
It's covered in blood, do you think the man is dead?"
Your stomach turns, it itches and burns in the night
It's the devils night out, do you dare?
There ain't no hide out do you hear?
Stupidity aside it rings out with the blast in the night
A blown out brain decorates the wall
Goddamn I thought I'd seen it all
Rush to the sink, they don't care what you think in the night
It's the devils night out, do you dare?
It turns you inside out with fear!
Time heals no wounds it just won't pass
There ain't no promises that will last
The world's a ghoul and you are it's shovel in the night
And it goes without saying
No man will walk without praying
But it will do you no good unless you've understood
What's going down here in the night
It's the devils night out, do you dare?
And they've turned the lights out do you hear!?
The song “Lights Out” by Entombed is a dark and haunting track that explores the themes of fear, violence, and depravity in modern society. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the urban landscape at night, where a subway train roars through the city, carrying with it the secrets and sins of its passengers. The singer observes a body on the tracks, but feels a sense of detachment and apathy towards the gruesome scene. He watches as a man pulls out a gun and fires it in frustration, leaving a blown-out brain on the wall. The lyrics convey a sense of hopelessness and despair, as the singer acknowledges the darkness that lurks within human nature.
The chorus of the song, “It’s the devil’s night out, do you dare?”, is a powerful and chilling reminder of the chaos and violence that can erupt at any moment. The line “And they’ve turned the lights out, do you hear?” suggests that the world has descended into darkness and disorder, a place where the forces of evil hold sway. The final lines of the song are an admonishment to the listener to seek understanding and wisdom in the face of the horrors of the world.
Overall, “Lights Out” is a bleak and unsettling song that lays bare the ugliness of humanity. The lyrics are vivid and visceral, painting a picture of a world where the forces of darkness and malevolence are never far away.
