Distress of Ignorance
Envy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The cruel history is still holding.
The time raised this valuable theory.
Learning crushes the mistakes.
Only on the days we cry, we rip the times.

And now, the background of the stories we tell and pass.
We know it and the truth at the bottom is crazed.
What our behavior means.
What comes from our knowledge?
Though we wait, the answers won't come ahead.

Cannot connect each person's thinking.
Everything is ill-matched and awkward.
High ideal. Sickness and poor minds.
Ignorance becomes a brag. Such a sad distance.
A miracle of sinful brains.

Now switch. Dare tomorrow.
Hold a great force to avoid agony.
Left in a self-alienation.

Have faith in both erasing you out and loving you.
The origins play frightened in a small garden.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Envy's song "Distress of Ignorance" convey a deep sense of frustration and sadness about the state of humanity's collective history and knowledge. The first stanza acknowledges the weight of past injustices and mistakes, and the hope that learning can prevent similar errors in the future. However, the second stanza reveals a sense of disillusionment with the present: despite knowing the truth, individuals and society as a whole seem unable to effectively apply this knowledge to create a better world. The lines "Everything is ill-matched and awkward" and "Ignorance becomes a brag" point to the harmful consequences of ignorance and lack of empathy.

The final stanza suggests a call to action, urging the listener to "switch" and "hold a great force" in order to avoid further pain and suffering. The idea of "self-alienation" suggests that individuals must also be willing to examine and confront their own biases and flaws. The final line, "The origins play frightened in a small garden," is open to interpretation - it could refer to the fragility of life, the potential for growth in a small space, or something else entirely.

Overall, "Distress of Ignorance" is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged exploration of the human condition, emphasizing the importance of empathy and a willingness to learn and grow.

The second show I ever went to was alone when I was 16. It was Envy at the Che Cafe with Japandi. I didn’t have enough money for much so all I got was a shirt and a coin purse. They were touring on Insomniac Doze but it was still an incredible show

@michaelmartucci4684

Best show I ever witnessed ENVY and Welcome the Plague Year at University of Delaware, probably '04/'05.

Even the nerdy ass old professor guy that had to chaperone the show was hypnotized by Envy's live performance.
