How Can I Keep From Singing?
Enya [1991] - Shepherd Moons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My life goes on in endless song
Above earth´s lamentations,
I hear the real, though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation.

Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear its music ringing,
It sounds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?

While though the tempest loudly roars,
I hear the truth, it liveth.
And though the darkness 'round me close,
Songs in the night it giveth.

No storm can shake my inmost calm,
While to that rock I´m clinging.
Since love is lord of heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?

When tyrants tremble in their fear
And hear their death knell ringing,
When friends rejoice both far and near
How can I keep from singing?

In prison cell and dungeon vile
Our thoughts to them are winging,

When friends by shame are undefiled
How can I keep from singing?

The song's opening line, "My life goes on in endless song," sings to the endless and healing nature of music. It's a testament to music's power to transport its listeners to a different world, free of the pain and despair of our daily lives. Enya also speaks to the real and comforting nature of music. The song's second verse highlights the role of music as a comforter during the darkest times. It provides solace even during life's difficulties and loudly roars. Furthermore, these songs provide hope and light in the face of darkness and struggle. Enya affirms that no storm can shake her inmost calm because she is clinging to the rock of love, which is the lord of both heaven and earth. My friend gave me this CD and I used to listen to it all the time. He ended up commiting suicide after we graduated high school. Now I just cry when I hear the songs. Why did you do it Chris? God this world is so messed up for people to want to die. People don't know how beautiful and wonderful they are because we forgot how to give love and live without making people feel bad about themselves. May all people that read this know that they are special and blessed to be here. I'll never forget you Chris Lee.

I am so sorry for your loss. This happens much to often. The world almost seems like it’s unraveling right in front of you. People should really know how beautiful they make the world in other peoples eyes.

@lavieja4673

I'm so sorry. It's awful when something that brings you joy becomes haunted by sad memories. May your friend's memory be a blessing, and may you find joy in this music again (maybe not today or tomorrow, but some day)

@officersoulknight6321

Bless you, bless Chris, bless the world.
