Enya (Clannad) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Cold as the northern winds
In December mornings,
Cold is the cry that rings
From this far distant shore.
Winter has come too late
Too close beside me.
How can I chase away
All these fears deep inside?

I'll wait the signs to come.
I'll find a way
I will wait the time to come.
I'll find a way home.
My light shall be the moon
And my path - the ocean.
My guide the morning star
As I sail home to you.

I'll wait the signs to come.
I'll find a way
I will wait the time to come.
I'll find a way home.
My light shall be the moon
And my path - the ocean.
My guide the morning star
As I sail home to you.

Who then can warm my soul?
Who can quell my passion?

Out of these dreams - a boat
I will sail home to you.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Enya's song Exile depict the feeling of being alone, lost and longing to return home. The first verse talks about the coldness of the winter winds and the feeling of being too close to everything. The singer is filled with despair and sadness that cannot be easily pushed away. In the next few lines, the singer talks about waiting for a sign, a way to return home. The moon, ocean and morning star become her guides to reach her destination. She hopes to sail back to her loved ones, feeling warmth and comfort.

In the second stanza, the singer speaks about the deep rooted pain she holds. No one can warm her soul or quell her passion as she feels trapped in her dreams. However, she finds solace in the thought of a boat that will take her home. This shows the singer's determination to fight the pain and fight for her happiness. In the end, the boat is a symbol of hope and a new journey to return home.
