O Come O Come Emmanuel
Enya (Holiday) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

O come, o come Emmanuel
To free your captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear

Rejoice, rejoice o Israel
To you shall come Emmanuel
Veni, veni, Emmanuel
Captivum solve Israel
Qui gemit in exilio
Privatus Dei Filio

Gaude, gaude, Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te, Israel

(Gaude, gaude)
(Gaude, gaude)
(Gaude, gaude)
(Gaude, gaude)

Gaude, gaude, Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te, Israel

Gaude, gaude, Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te, Israel

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "O Come O Come Emmanuel" speak of a longing for the arrival of the Messiah to bring freedom to a captive Israel. The lines, "To free your captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here, Until the Son of God appear," express the expectation of the Jewish people for the coming of the Messiah to redeem them from their captivity. The song urges Emmanuel to come and solve the captivity of Israel and break the chains of their exiled state. The refrain "Rejoice, rejoice, O Israel, To you shall come Emmanuel" serves as a proclamation of the hope that this long-awaited savior would indeed come to bring great joy and salvation to the people of Israel.

The song is originally based on the "O Antiphons," seven short prayers chanted or recited in the seven days leading up to Christmas Eve in the Catholic Church. "O Come O Come Emmanuel" is based on the fifth antiphon- "O Oriens" ("O Dawn of the East"), celebrating the triumphant arrival of the Savior. The melody of the song is a traditional 15th-century French tune known as "Veni Emmanuel." Interestingly, some variations of the melody found in different parts of the world, especially in Europe, are significantly different from the version typically sung in English-speaking countries.

The song has become one of the most beloved and commonly performed Christmas hymns, in both traditional and contemporary arrangements, and has been covered by many artists over the years, including Enya. The lyrics have been translated into many different languages, including Latin, German, Spanish, and Finnish. The song has also been prominently featured in several films and TV shows, including the Netflix series "The Crown" and the film "Home Alone."

Enyaโ€™s voice is amazing but donโ€™t forget it is only the tip of the iceberg of her talent. Most, if not all, of the voices youโ€™re hear are her. All of the instruments are her playing, she usually arranges her own music. She is the consummate musical talent. The world is a better place because of her.

@flavioptferreira

Wow I din't know that. That lady is indeed a Queen.

@integralinsanity1641

Really? I had no idea thst sound exhausting to do

@bobthesuper1

@Integral Insanity I agree. That is why it takes her a year or more to finish an album. Probably also why she doesnโ€™t tour much, if at all.
