1. - Epica is a symphonic metal band, founded by guitarist and vocalist Mark Jansen, subsequent to his departure from After Forever. Formed as a symphonic metal band with gothic tendencies, later Epica have incorporated into their sound strong death metal influences. Starting from the third album, even progressive metal attitudes have become evident. In addition, the band often uses thrash metal and groove metal riffs, black metal passages (mostly in the drum technique), power metal moments and references to Arabic music. Some songs also have electronic shades, djent transitions and folk metal melodies derived from middle eastern, Chinese and Celtic traditions. Epica is also known for the attention to the vocal lines that, in contrast to the heavy context, weave very catchy, easy to hold, sophisticated and emotional melodies. The use of mezzo-soprano vocals and growled vocals, performed by Simone Simons and Mark Jansen respectively, is fundamental to the band's sound. They primarily write their own lyrics, which often deal with philosophical, psychological, spiritual, moral, scientific, environmental, socio-political, global and topical and personal themes. Epica is also known for their wide use of orchestra and opera choirs.
In 2003, Epica's debut album The Phantom Agony was released through Transmission Records. Consign to Oblivion followed in 2005, and debuted at No. 12 in the Dutch charts. They moved labels to Nuclear Blast following Transmission's bankruptcy, and in 2007, released their third studio album The Divine Conspiracy, which charted at No. 9 in the Netherlands. 2009's Design Your Universe was met with yet greater success, debuting at No. 8 in the Dutch Albums Chart, and charting across Europe, also garnering much critical acclaim. Epica's fifth studio album Requiem for the Indifferent was released in 2012. Well received by critics, it achieved international success, entering the US's Billboard 200 at No. 104, and Japan's Oricon Albums Chart at No. 172.
At the beginning of May 2014 the band released their sixth album, The Quantum Enigma, which was a huge international success, debuting on No. 110 on US Billboard 200 and peaking at No. 4 in Epica's homeland Netherlands. In June 2015 Epica was awarded the Music Export Awards, which is given to the Dutch act with the most international success in the past year. Their seventh album, The Holographic Principle, was released in September 2016 to continued international success, equaling the peak chart position set by its predecessor in the Netherlands. The band released their eighth album, Omega, in February 2021. On 16 September 2022, the band announced their third EP, The Alchemy Project. It was released on 11 November 2022 via Atomic Fire.

Monopoly on Truth
Epica Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Sed non semper veridici
At the zenith of wisdom
No defying myself
To the point of reaction
You propose and I dispose
It's clear, what you say
The truth isn't just a derivative of your views
Truth is a fiction of your views
These are my thoughts
No discussion
My righteous plan
Just think it over now
Another point of view
It's time we realize our errs
Where is it leading to if nobody sees it
There's never an absolute
Nos docti, pensantes
Sed non semper veridici
I can be so enchanting
With words beset in gold
Your senseless demanding
You propose and I dispose
I see what you mean
It's clear, what you say
The truth isn't just a derivative of your views
This is the way
No discussion
In my life
Just think it over now
Another point of view
It's time we realize our errs
Where is it leading to if nobody sees it
There's never an absolute
You're in denial
Can we trust all the facts
And believe that the fancied wise are just and needed?
Do we want to rely on the views
Of the righteous ones who are succeeding?
You look all around and you see
All the things that are not meant to be
Then you know it's time to let them go
Your fury can no longer stand
This hauteur will come to an end
Looking for leftover friends is in vain
You'll be alone again
No more refusal
Face it , slow down
It is for renewal
And expect no miracles
(Expect no miracle when you're in an endless fall)
No regrets if you're leaving
You're a true deceiver
(Accept the here and now
Or regret will end up)
Mas of justice, shield of menacing strength
Will not bend, only break
Can't we respect, Can we neglect
(No respecting so neglecting)
Those who are suffering in need of help?
(Those who suffer, needing our help)
You are the one I wouldn't like to become
(You are not the one I would like to become)
Not at all in the end
(Hear our calling)
Carry me slowly
In the depths of your life
(Fear the thunder)
Free me from barren fields
And grey thunder lies
(Semblance falling)
Under the grand facade
The truth loves to hide
Can we trust all the facts
And believe that the fancied wise are just and needed?
Do we want to rely on the views
Of the righteous ones who are succeeding?
You look all around and you see
All the things that are not meant to be
Then you know it's time to let them go
To let them go
Nos docti
Sed plus scimus
Non sperentes
Quod dicunt Alii
The lyrics of Epica's song Monopoly on Truth speaks of the human tendency to believe that one's own truth is the absolute truth. The first stanza sets the tone for the theme of the song, emphasizing the fact that even the well-versed in knowledge are not always truthful. The second stanza speaks of how the singer can be persuasive with their words but refuses to accept another's point of view that does not fit their own narrative. The chorus stresses that the truth is not just a derivative of one's individual views and that there is no absolute truth.
The third stanza highlights the consequences of believing in one's monopoly of truth, which can lead to one being in denial and not addressing the issues that plague them. The fourth and fifth stanzas propose the idea of respecting and helping those who are suffering, rather than believing in the righteousness of the successful. The song ends with a plea to let go of one's belief in their monopoly on truth and accept a different point of view.
Overall, the song warns of the dangers of believing in one's own truth and neglecting the suffering of others, urging listeners to be open-minded and considerate of different views.
