Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Epica's song Stabat Mater Dolorosa are a reference to the Latin hymn with the same name, part of the Roman Catholic liturgy for the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. The hymn describes the lament of Mary, the mother of Jesus, as she witnesses her son's crucifixion. The first line of the lyrics, "Stabat mater dolorosa," translates to "The sorrowful mother was standing," setting the scene for the rest of the hymn. The following line, "juxta Crucem lacrimosa," means "weeping beside the cross," emphasizing Mary's sorrow and the gravity of the situation. The final line, "dum pendebat Filius," means "while her son was hanging," cementing the brutal truth of what Mary was forced to witness.

The lyrics to this song, while simple, convey a lot of emotion and meaning. They are a poignant tribute to Mary's strength and resilience in the face of immense suffering. Epica's use of the Latin hymn in this song is fitting and powerful, adding to the song's gravity and depth.

A classical song in the middle of a metal concert and the whole crowd in absolute silence, beautiful.

Kyle B

To be more precise, it's a Baroque piece, not Classical, but yeah, beautiful :)

Magisterium Guitars

That happens in every metal concert whenever something amazing is about to unfold.

@Kyle B Baroque is a sub-category of classical, isn't it ?

Kyle B

@isbjørn Actually no.
In a broad sense, you can call any old music "classical", which is what most people do. But if you want to be more precise, you need to know that the Classical period was (roughly) from 1750 to 1820, preceded by Baroque period and followed by Romantic period. However, exact years for these periods are not set in stone and some dates can overlap. That's why I said roughly.
