The band went through a number of names until settling to Eppu Normaali 1977 after a Mel Brooks' movie, Young Frankenstein. Under the Eppu Normaali monicker the band appeared on a local rock band competition, but the jury remained unimpressed - the exception to the rule being the Finnish rock legend, Juice Leskinen. Subsequently they were picked up by newly formed POKO Rekords, which released their debut record Aknepop in 1978.
Their early Ramones-influenced punk pop style gradually evolved to a more contemporary, almost AOR-like sound, peaking in the mid-eighties with albums like Rupisia riimejä, karmeita tarinoita (1984),Kahdeksas ihme (1985) , Valkoinen kupla (1986) and Imperiumin vastaisku (1988). The last three have recorded sales of over 100,000 copies respectively.
1990's Historian suurmiehiä still performed well saleswise, but the band was running out of creative juices. After 1993's Studio Etana the band went on indefinitive hiatus, only broken by 1996's best selling compilation, Repullinen hittejä and a finnish tour. Sporadic gigs and festival appearances followed during late nineties and early noughties before a new studio record, Sadan vuoden päästäkin, finally emerged in 2004.
Their latest studio effort, Tiheän sisään, was released in 2007 and in 2011 they released Mutala, an album containing accoustic renditions of their songs.
Radio
Eppu Normaali Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Ei siellä soi kuin Bowie ja Karma
Taikka jotain muita niitten suosikeita
Joista joka ainoo tietenkin on skeida
Kun ne kelaa läpi levytykset uudet
Ne löytää sieltä kaikki keskinkertaisuudet
Liika-annos Eaglesia, ELOa ja Abbaa
Jee jee jee
Kun radion aukaisee
Jee jee jee
Niin kohta raukaisee
Uh, huh, Radio
Uh, huh, Radio
Uh, huh, Radio
Tässä punk-sinkussa on sitä sanomaa
Kun se edustaa toimittajan levyfirmaa omaa
Toivoa vain soppii että köyhät oppii
Että rautalanka ei oo mittään
Jee jee jee
Kun radion aukaisee
Jee jee jee
Niin kohta raukaisee
Uh, huh, Radio
Uh, huh, Radio
Uh, huh, Radio
Uh, huh, Radio
Uh, huh, Radio
The song "Radio" by Eppu Normaali criticizes the lack of variety and quality in radio programming. The singer claims that whenever you turn on the radio, you are sure to only hear Bowie and Karma or other favorites, all of which are sh*t. The radio stations play all the mediocre hits from Eagles, ELO, and Abba, which according to the singer are enough to kill even a tough guy like him. The Jee jee jee chorus seems to represent the frustration and disappointment felt by the singer after being disappointed over and over again by the limited options on the radio.
The second verse adds another layer to the criticism of the radio industry. The punk single is described as a message from a journalist who works for their own record company. The hope is that the poor will learn to appreciate more than just the basic, typical pop hits that are played continuously on the radio. There is a sarcastic tone in these lyrics, suggesting that the radio industry could offer so much more but chooses not to.
