Trip To Jerusalem
Eraserheads Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

open your door
dance on the floor
hey what's your name?
let's play a game
let it begin
your head will spin
i am the champ
come see me stomp

it never ends..
it never ends..
it never ends..

oh tell me do you wanna fly?
fly high way up in the sky
or maybe you don't even have to try
all you have to do is follow that star

but when the star doesn't shine
you won't be able to find your way
and the wiseman will still remain
the king of trip to Jerusalem

sometimes you win
sometimes you fail
choose holy blood
lose holy grail
just when you think you've gone so far
you'll find yourself, back to the start..

it never ends..
it never ends..
it never ends..

oh tell me do you wanna fly?
fly high way up in the sky
or maybe you don't even have to try
all you have to do is follow that star

but when the star doesn't shine
you won't be able to find your way
there won't be any other chance to be
the king of trip to Jerusalem

the music plays like a heavenly choir
lovely chairs are there if you get tired

don't listen to a word he says
he's just trying to distract you
do your own thing
stick with what you are..

open your drawer
dance on the floor
and now at last, just two of us
only one chair, who will sit there?
is it the king? or is it the heir?

it never ends..
it never ends..
it never ends..

oh tell me do you wanna fly?
fly high way up in the sky
or maybe you don't even have to try
all you have to do is follow that star

but when the star doesn't shine
you won't be able to find your way
the only thing that we can do is play
on a trip to Jerusalem..
on a trip to Jerusalem..

on a trip to Jerusalem..
on a trip to Jerusalem..

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Eraserheads' song Trip To Jerusalem can be interpreted in a lot of ways. At first glance, the song seems to be talking about a fun and carefree trip to a party destination, where the singer is inviting someone to dance and play a game. However, as the song goes on, it becomes clear that there is a deeper message being conveyed. The repeated line "it never ends" suggests that the singer is stuck in a cycle, perhaps of partying or pursuing a certain lifestyle, that feels impossible to break free from. The references to the "king of trip to Jerusalem" and "holy blood/holy grail" add a mystical and almost religious element to the song, suggesting that the singer is grappling with deeper existential questions.

The idea of following a star and flying high in the sky also adds to the spiritual undertones of the song. The star could represent a guiding light or goal that the singer is striving towards, but when it doesn't shine, the singer is lost and unable to find their way. The mention of competing to be the "king or heir" in the final verse raises questions about power, social status, and hierarchy. The line "do your own thing/stick with what you are" could be seen as an encouragement to be oneself and not to get too caught up in trying to fit in or compete with others.

This is my favorite Eraserheads song simply because it's the most mysterious.

The wordplay is beautiful but the meaning is deeply hidden. The best theory that I came up with though is the fact that this song is an allegory for the most notorious ongoing territorial dispute in human history - Ownership of the Holy Land... Palestine (If you're not familiar with it, there are tons of resources on the internet).

Long story short, Palestine was divided between 2 disputing parties - The State of Palestine (mostly Islamic) and The State of Israel (mostly Jewish).

Anyway, the best parts of the song that somehow suggest this are:

"Sometimes you win
Sometimes you fail"
- The endless Palestinian-Israeli conflict

"Choose holy blood
Choose holy grail"
- A reference to the most famous Jewish-born Palestinian in human history (si Jesus, malamang).

"And now at last
Just two of us"
- Self-Explanatory

"Only one chair
Who will sit there?
Is it the king?
Or is it the heir?
It never ends"
- I get goosebumps in this part. Especially due to the fact that what happened to the disputing parties is EXACTLY what happens to the last 2 contestants in a game of Musical Chairs. The suspiciously RED chair in the music video also possibly represents the land that they're fighting for... albeit, bloodstained.

Crazy huh?

We may never know what it really means... but that's the most fun part of listening to Eraserheads songs. They tend to have more depth than you would initially think.

Eraserheads may have been ahead of my time but listening to their songs makes no difference no matter what the timeline is. They are what I can call as one of the rarest real Pinoy music. They are a legend to Philippine Rock music . Every song is a classic ride. I LOVE YOU E-HEADS!!
