Waiting For The Bus
Eraserheads Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've standing here waiting for the bus
On a Saturday laundry on my back
Ultraviolet rays like I'm posing for a shot
In a magazine what the hell does it mean?

I'm a travelling man straight from the car
I'm a thousand miles away from my number one fan
My folks are getting tight won't let me out at night
You can't avoid the complications
When there's no reason at all
When the right hand stikes we fly
I'll drink my beer I'll wipe my tears
Southbound in the sky

Another crime another reason gets you everyday
The only time that you can talk
You ain't nothing to say
Well I'm caught up in a stupid game
That I can't play
It's just a waste of time but I'm in anyway
I've been sitting here watching the signs
Too many cars at night belching in the moonlight
We're doing ninety as the sky turns to grey
The people look like bees buzzing by the highway
The wheels are rolling like a rolling stone
Alone I choose the road less traveled on
Now I'm lying here waiting for the day
On the second deck
Dreaming of a girl from a fairytale
Chain around my neck
A ride is all it takes but pains get in the way

I'm in it anyway hey
I'm in it anyway

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Eraserheads' song "Waiting for the Bus" reflect the feeling of detachment and disorientation that comes with being a traveling man. The singer tells of his experience waiting for a bus on a Saturday with his laundry in tow, feeling as though he's posing for a magazine shoot with the harsh ultraviolet rays beaming down on him. He's thousands of miles away from his number one fan and his folks won't let him out at night causing complications. He recognizes that there's no reason for such complexities, but when the right hand strikes, he takes off and flies, drinking his beer and wiping his tears as he heads southbound in the sky.

Each day brings another reason and another crime to the point that he finds himself caught up in a stupid game, even though it's just a waste of time. He watches as too many cars belch out smoke on the darkened highways at night, passing by like buzzing bees. He chooses the road less traveled and often finds himself alone, waiting for the day of return while dreaming of a girl from a fairytale with a chain around his neck. He's in it anyway, despite the pains that get in the way.

The song speaks of the desire to take off and explore new places, but also of the struggles that come with leaving behind loved ones and the safety of familiarity. It expresses the feelings of disorientation and loss of control that come with being on the road, a theme that is relatable to many.
