Solsbury Hill
Erasure Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night

He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing stretching every nerve
I had to listen had no choice

I did not believe the information
Just had to trust imagination
My heart was going boom boom, boom
"Son," he said, "Grab your things, I've come to take you home."

To keeping silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut

So I went from day to day
Tho' my life was in a rut
'Till I thought of what I'd say
Which connection I should cut

I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart was going boom boom boom
"Hey," he said, "grab your things, I've come to take you home."
Yeah back home

When illusion spin her net
I'm never where I want to be
And liberty she pirouette
When I think that I am free

Watched by empty silhouettes
Who close their eyes, but still can see
No one taught them etiquette
I will show another me

Today I don't need a replacement
I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant

My heart was going boom boom boom
"Hey," I said, "You can keep my things, they've come to take me home."

Overall Meaning

The song 'Solsbury Hill' by Erasure is a soulful ballad that depicts a poignant journey of self-discovery. The song's protagonist is on a climb up Solsbury Hill, where he has a surreal experience that transcends the physical world. He witnesses an eagle flying out of the night and encounters a wise old man who invites him to leave his monotonous life behind and follow him. Although initially skeptical, the singer follows the man and eventually realizes that a profound change is necessary for him to find meaning in his life. He begins to see things differently, and his heart starts racing.

The man tells the singer that he has come to take him home. Still, the singer can't understand what this home means, as he feels like he's already at home. As he journeys with the man, he begins to make sense of the experience, and by the end of the song, he declares: "You can keep my things, they've come to take me home." The song is about finding oneself and realizing that the journey of self-discovery is a lifelong process that requires courage and an open mind.

Now I'm straight but seriously some of the most down to earth friends I've had were gay or lesbian! They respected me for me and I for them! Who you love doesnt matter! It's how you hold yourself that counts! In all walks of life!

Fantastic cover. Andy Bell has such a unique voice that after hearing just a few words you know its him. He's up their with the likes of David Bowie, George Michael, Tom Jones and Peter Gabriel to name but a few.

@Karen Courtney-Smith I was about to comment that Andy's voice (which I love) sounds VERY much like Alison Moyet (whom I have loved since 1982) at times.

Big Peter Gabriel fan and never knew this version existed but I can see how it resonated with young LGBT people. Gabriel wrote it about leaving Genesis, even though he still wasn't sure it was the right move. It's a song about giving up everything you know for something that might be better. And fuck yeah, everyone can relate to that.
