Benét's father loved rap music and inspired an interest in music in his son. He sang with a Top 100-style group called Gerard in the late 1980s, and then Benét, his sister, Lisa, and his cousin, George Nash Jr., formed a band called Benét and released a self-titled album in 1992 but only sold 100,000 copies.
Benét's career-building, however, was interrupted by a series of personal tragedies. His father died of cancer, and his girlfriend, Tami Marie Stauff, the mother of Benét's daughter, India, born in 1992, died of injuries suffered in an automobile crash (April 24, 1993) after languishing in a coma for five days. Benét endured a long period of personal and creative depression, often feeling that only his responsibilities as a father kept him going. He took a job with United Parcel Service in Milwaukee and eased back into music by producing demo recordings for local artists.
In 1994, Benét signed with Warner Bros. Records, releasing his solo debut album, True to Myself, in fall (1996). Individual songs from the album were successful, including the top-ten R&B hit "Spiritual Thang" and "Let's Stay Together," which appeared on the soundtrack of the film A Thin Line Between Love and Hate.
His next album, A Day in the Life, was released in 1999; its first single, "Georgy Porgy (featuring Faith Evans)" received significant airplay, but the second single, "Spend My Life With You (featuring Tamia)", became a smash hit. "Spend My Life With You" rose to number one on the American R&B charts, was certified gold, and nominated for a 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. The album, A Day In The Life also won a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Album, Male.
Benét also recorded for Earth, Wind, and Fire's 30th anniversary CD. He contributed vocals to the post-Katrina charity single, "Heart of America" along with Michael McDonald, Wynonna Judd, and Terry Dexter. He has also lent his vocals to many jazz albums for such artists as Wayman Tisdale, George Duke, Chris Botti, Jeff Lorber, Boney James, etc.
Benét has also been active as an actor; he had a recurring role on the television program For Your Love (1998 - 2002). He made his film debut alongside Mariah Carey in Glitter (2001). He has a recurring role on the MTV scripted show "Kaya" (2007) where he plays a music producer.
His Love & Life was released on September 9, 2008. The first single You're The Only One is currently rising on the r&b charts (having already hit No.1 on the Adult R&B Airplay chart (Billboard)). It is his first top twenty hit in 2 years.
Sometimes I Cry

Two years since you walked away from me
Since all of our scattered dreams, huh
Were just thrown away
I'm finally gettin' back to what I used to be
Shared my pain with my family
Think I'm on my way
But it's taken some time, yeah
I can live my life without praying that we could make up
I'm movin' on, I'm feeling strong inside but
Sometimes I cry babe
When I'm all alone with this heart of mine, ooh
Sometimes I cry baby
Although you've been gone for a long, long time, ooh yeah yeah
I heard you're movin' in with someone new
I hope all your dreams come true
And you'll both be happy, yeah
Been long enough for me to take a look around
I met a girl, we been hanging out, she's been good for me
But when we making love, she don't take me there like you used to
And it hurts when I lie, when I lie baby
Help me understand how to push you out, forget you
And let you go 'cause Lord knows I've tried yeah
Sometimes I cry baby
Baby I've been hurtin' for a long, long time. Yes I have babe
Sometimes I cry ba-a-a-by
Ain't nothing working for this pain of mine, hoo ooh hoo
I'll just have to fake it
Until I can make it
There's a smile on my face, yeah, but I'm broken inside, yeah
Sometimes I cry
When I'm all alone , when I'm all alone with this heart of mine, yeah
Sometimes I cry baby, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Although you've been gone for a long long, a long long
Long, long, long, long, long, long, long, yeah, baby, baby, baby
I can't take it no more
I can't take it no no no
No come back to me
Baby, baby please, oh baby, oh, oh
The song "Sometimes I Cry" by Eric Benét is a bittersweet tale of heartbreak and moving on. The lyrics speak of a man who is trying to keep himself together after a painful breakup. The first stanza starts with the singer reflecting on the two years that have gone by since his lover left. He acknowledges that they had shared dreams that never came to fruition, and he's only just starting to get back to who he used to be. He's learned to share his pain with his family, and they have helped him a great deal. Despite all that, he still shows signs of sadness – he cries when he's all alone with his heart.
The second half of the song speaks of attempts to find someone else to fill the void left by his former lover. He's met someone who's been good for him, but he can't get the same spark that he had before. The singer is in agony, trying to come to terms with the fact that he's no longer with his ex-lover, and he can't seem to push her out of his mind. The song is a powerful example of the raw emotions that come with heartbreak.
Overall, "Sometimes I Cry" is a touching song that many people can relate to. The longing and sadness expressed in the lyrics are something that almost everyone has felt at some point in their lives.
