Benét's father loved classical music and inspired an interest in music in his son. By his teens, Eric had formed a vocal group with his sister and cousin called "Benét." The group released a self-titled album in 1992 that sold 70,000 copies.
Also in 1992, Benét's girlfriend, Tami Stauff, gave birth to a daughter they named India. The couple's happiness was short-lived when 25-year old Tami was killed in a car accident on April 24, 1993.
In 1994, Benét signed with Warner Bros. Records, releasing his solo debut album, True to Myself, in fall (1996). His next album, A Day in the Life, was released in 1999; its first single, "Georgy Porgy (featuring Faith Evans)" received significant airplay, but the second single, "Spend My Life With You (featuring Tamia)", became a smash hit. "Spend My Life With You" rose to number one on the American R&B charts, was certified gold, and nominated for a 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. The album, A Day In The Life also won a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Album, Male. Benét also recorded for Earth, Wind, and Fire's 30th anniversary CD.
Benét has also been active as an actor; he had a recurring role on the television program For Your Love (1998 - 2002). He made his film debut in Glitter (2001).
Hurricane
Eric Benét Lyrics

The winds of change can devastate
And it took this much for me
With nowhere to run and no reason left to hide, gonna hold on
All the walls around are broken down
Now I can hear the rising sun
Surrounded by everything I want, but nothing that I need
Sometimes what you fear the most is what you need to find that road
Right around that curve, a lesson learned...
Now that I have the eyes to see
A hurricane...a hurricane
It's sometimes the only way to wash away the pain
A hurricane....a hurricane
It's sometimes the only thing that brings you back again
With poise and toys I'd isolate
But the wind was strong and true
But now I see where the treasure is
'Cause they only blocked my view
Spiraling down but so oblivious, got to find my way home
There's a heart that bleeds trapped in me
But how do I break this shell of stone?
A hurricane...a hurricane
It's sometimes the only way to wash away the pain
A hurricane....a hurricane
It's sometimes the only thing that brings you back again
Sometimes I'd cry, but tears wouldn't fall
And sometimes I'd try to break those walls and feel your love
But I came alive inside when I finally found my way
A hurricane...a hurricane
It's sometimes the only way to wash away the pain
A hurricane....a hurricane
Sometimes the only thing that brings you back again
A hurricane...a hurricane
It's sometimes the only way to wash away the pain
A hurricane...
The lyrics to Eric Benét's song Hurricane are reflective and introspective. The singer describes standing in disarray but feeling a sense of serenity despite the chaos. He acknowledges that sometimes the winds of change can be devastating but that devastating experiences are necessary to bring growth and clarity. The chorus repeats the phrase "A hurricane…a hurricane" and the singer describes that sometimes this natural disaster is necessary to "wash away the pain" and to bring one "back again". The song touches on themes of isolation and loss of identity, but ultimately ends on a hopeful note with the singer experiencing a sense of rebirth and newfound clarity.
The lyrics to Hurricane are deeply personal and are a reflection of Eric Benét's own experiences. He has spoken in interviews about the difficult period in his life where his career and marriage were in turmoil. Hurricane was written during this period and it expresses the turmoil and eventual clarity that he found through the pain he experienced. The concept of a hurricane is used as a metaphor for this period of upheaval and transformation.
