Benét's father loved classical music and inspired an interest in music in his son. By his teens, Eric had formed a vocal group with his sister and cousin called "Benét." The group released a self-titled album in 1992 that sold 70,000 copies.
Also in 1992, Benét's girlfriend, Tami Stauff, gave birth to a daughter they named India. The couple's happiness was short-lived when 25-year old Tami was killed in a car accident on April 24, 1993.
In 1994, Benét signed with Warner Bros. Records, releasing his solo debut album, True to Myself, in fall (1996). His next album, A Day in the Life, was released in 1999; its first single, "Georgy Porgy (featuring Faith Evans)" received significant airplay, but the second single, "Spend My Life With You (featuring Tamia)", became a smash hit. "Spend My Life With You" rose to number one on the American R&B charts, was certified gold, and nominated for a 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. The album, A Day In The Life also won a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Album, Male. Benét also recorded for Earth, Wind, and Fire's 30th anniversary CD.
Benét has also been active as an actor; he had a recurring role on the television program For Your Love (1998 - 2002). He made his film debut in Glitter (2001).
Lost In Time
Eric Benét Lyrics

It's you again!
There's a kiss that let's me know,
This love won't end.
There's a life, there's a touch and a smile
And we're making love,
And all is perfect in my lonely world again.
As we lay we make a plan for life together,
I can't believe,
I can't conceive all the time that you're not with me,
But in a flash I'm in this lonely room again.
[Chorus]
I don't wanna stay here lost in time,
I don't understand this heart of mine,
I keep letting go to fantasy,
Never letting go of you and me.
I don't wanna stay here lost without you!
There's a house upon the hill I hear the laughter,
And our children seem to grow each year much faster,
We're alone now in this emptiness and love still grows,
But only visions of a life that should have been.
[Chorus]
You are, the only one I'm holding down for always,
My heart, in the time of light, shinning bright in your
So far,
I can't let go, I won't let go,
And that's why,
I will face reality till it brings you back to me.
[Chorus: x3]
The lyrics to Eric Benét's song Lost In Time speaks of the profound longing and nostalgia that the singer experiences when he is separated from his love. The opening lines describe the familiar sound of a knock at his door, indicating his partner's return. He then paints a intimate picture of their togetherness, of a 'perfect' world where they are holding on tightly to a shared future. However, with equal suddenness, he is inevitably plunged back into loneliness, yearning for the return of his love.
The chorus expresses his ongoing confusion and heartbreak, as he struggles to understand his own desires and the hold his partner has over him. He acknowledges his attachment to this fantasy, allowing their shared love to persist in his mind even when he is without it physically. In the last verse, he paints the picture of a family, with laughter and joy and hopes that are never realized. Despite this, he remains steadfast in his devotion, holding out for the day when his love will return.
Overall, the song speaks to the heartache of separation and the strength of true love, and it is a testament to the power of music to convey the most profound emotions.
