Benét's father loved classical music and inspired an interest in music in his son. By his teens, Eric had formed a vocal group with his sister and cousin called "Benét." The group released a self-titled album in 1992 but only sold 70,000 copies possibly due to a lack of proper promotion by Capitol Records.
Also in 1992, Benét's girlfriend, Tami Stauff, gave birth to a daughter they named India. The couple's happiness was short-lived when 25-year old Tami was killed in a car accident on April 24, 1993.
In 1994, Benét signed with Warner Bros. Records, releasing his solo debut album, True to Myself, in fall (1996). His next album, A Day in the Life, was released in 1999; its first single, "Georgy Porgy (featuring Faith Evans)" received significant airplay, but the second single, "Spend My Life With You (featuring Tamia)", became a smash hit. "Spend My Life With You" rose to number one on the American R&B charts, was certified gold, and nominated for a 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. The album, A Day In The Life also won a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Album, Male. Benét also recorded for Earth, Wind, and Fire's 30th anniversary CD.
Benét has also been active as an actor; he had a recurring role on the television program For Your Love (1998 - 2002). He made his film debut in Glitter (2001).
He became engaged to actress Halle Berry in 1999, and they married in January 2001. The couple separated in 2003 and have since divorced.
Eric Benét and Manuela Testolini were married in the early evening [July 31st]. Eric and Manuela revealed that they're also expecting their first child together.
Eric Benet Takes on First Major Acting Gig in 'Trinity' “Trinity Goodheart,” a film about a visitation from an Angel that leads to substantial discovery of awareness and earth shattering faith questions.
The film is based on an original screenplay by Rhonda Freeman-Baraka centered around a 12-year old girl on a mission to reunite her disjointed family, announced by the producer Rick Eldridge.
Eric Benét also has a new album Love & Life

Mmm, hmm
Mmm, hmm
Yeah.ooh
Yeah.ooh
Yeah.ooh
Uh, uh, mmm, hmm
I still don't know the reason after all this time
I'm all alone but see it comes as no surprise
It seems like I go left each time that love goes right
Every time
By chance
Somethin' happens every time I get a chance
I feel the rhythm but I just don't know the dance
I want to move with you but something holds me back
Holds me back, yeah
All I ever needed I could never find
All I ever wanted was to get it right
Somebody tell me what is wrong with me
I wasn't sure, but I know now
I believe that it must be (Must be)
Love don't love me
Love don't love me
Oh, I
I know exactly what is missing in my life
Something for sure and something real, maybe a wife
But then I'm out the door before the morning light
Every night
So I pray
I'm so afraid I'm always gonna feel this way
Relationships only to pass the time away
Fear of commitment is a habit hard to break
I must say, yeah
All I ever needed I could never find
All I ever wanted was to get it right (Get it right)
Somebody tell me what is wrong with me (Wrong with me)
I wasn't sure, but I know now
I believe (I believe) that it must be (It must be)
Love don't love me (Hey)
Love don't love me (Don't love me)
All I ever wanted was some happiness (Happiness)
Take it to a level that's above the rest
I want to know how it's supposed to be
I want to feel something real
But I believe (I believe) that it must be (It must be)
Love don't love me (Love don't love me)
Love don't love me (No, no, it don't love me)
Someone teach my heart to fall in love again
That all I have to fear is fear itself
I know that I was born to love one woman
But why must I keep runnin' through the rest, oh
Yeah
Yeah.ooh
Yeah.ooh
Yeah.ooh
Uh, uh, mmm, oh, all I ever need
All I ever needed I could never find (Oh..)
All I ever wanted was to get it right (Hey)
Somebody tell me what is wrong with me (Tell me please)
I wasn't sure, but I know now
I believe (I believe ) that it must be (It must be)
Love don't love me (Love don't love me)
Love don't love me (Love don't love me)
All I ever wanted (Hey) was some happiness (Oh)
Take it to a level that's above the rest (That higher place)
I want to know how it's supposed to be
I want to feel something real
But I believe that it must be
Love don't love me (Oh)
Love don't love me (Ho)
All I ever needed I could never find (I could never find)
All I ever wanted was to get it right (Just to get it right)
Somebody tell me what is wrong with me (Oh, oh)
I wasn't sure, but I know now (Oh, oh)
I believe that it must be (Yeah)
Love don't love me (Love don't love me)
Love don't love me (Love don't love me)
All I ever wanted was some happiness (Oh)
Take it to a level that's above the rest (Hey)
I want to know how it's supposed to be
I want to feel something real (I)
But I believe that it must be (Oh)

Eric Benet’s “Love Don’t Love Me” is a lamentation on the struggles of finding meaningful love. The song explores the themes of loneliness, fear of commitment, and the constant search for genuine love. The opening lines, “Time, I still don't know the reason after all this time / I'm all alone but see it comes as no surprise” elucidate the loneliness felt by the singer, despite the passage of time. He goes on to sing, “All I ever needed I could never find / All I ever wanted was to get it right / Somebody tell me what is wrong with me”, expressing his confusion and frustration at not finding the right kind of love.
The song also highlights the fear of commitment that the singer faces – “Fear of commitment is a habit hard to break, I must say”. He acknowledges that he is missing out on something real in his life, yet he is unable to let down his guard and open himself up to the possibility of love fully. The constant search for happiness through love is a recurring theme as the song continues. The lines “All I ever wanted was some happiness / Take it to a level that's above the rest / I want to know how it's supposed to be” demonstrate the singer’s desperation for meaningful love that transcends all other relationships in his life.
Overall, “Love Don’t Love Me” is a slow-tempo R&B ballad that tackles the universal struggles of love and relationships. The song highlights how one can feel lonely despite the passage of time and struggle with issues such as fear of commitment, and the search for love that is genuine and fulfilling.
