House of the rising sun
Eric Burdon's i Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one

My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new bluejeans
My father was a gamblin' man
Down in New Orleans

Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk

Oh mother tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun

Well, I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I'm goin' back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain

Well, there is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun

And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one

Overall Meaning

The song House of the Rising Sun is about a warning to young men to stay away from the titular house in New Orleans. The house is a metaphor for a life of vice, particularly gambling and prostitution, and the singer himself falls prey to it, leading to his own ruin. The first verse sets the scene and introduces the house, which has been the ruin of many men, including the singer. The next two verses introduce the singer's parents, his mother a tailor and his father a gambler, indicating that the singer comes from a family that is familiar with the vices of New Orleans. The fourth verse details the life of a gambler and emphasizes the fleeting satisfaction that comes with a night of drunkenness. The fifth verse contains the singer's warning to others, telling them to avoid the house or risk a life of sin and misery like he experienced. The final verse reveals that the singer is leaving town, but acknowledges that he is only leaving with a "ball and chain", indicating that his time at the House of the Rising Sun has taken a toll on him.

The name of the LP is Sun Secrets from the Eric Burden Band. There is also a second LP entitled STOP. Neither LP was supposed to be released to the public for distribution... it was collection of studio tapes from rehearsal sessions. The tracks were selected by the producer and studio engineer and released for limited distribution. (I bought the cassette in downtown Athens, Greece on vacation then.) The Eric Burden Band performed on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and blew everyone else off the stage that night and people were waiting for the LP to come it and it was finally released. Two years later STOP was released long after the group broke up. Powerful music performed by superior musicians. These songs easily stand the test of time. Eric Burden wasn't a musician and performing with him was challenging for pro musicians. Eric had been dumped by his producer Jerry Goldsmith and Lonnie Jordan from his earlier group WAR and had stayed in LA and brought this band of masters together in the studio for rehearsals. (WAR went on to a string pop hits as we all know and Lonnie Jordan screwed them over too. The original WAR band is now called The Low Rider Band.)

But this track is not on the original Sun Secrets. Does it belong to these sessions? Where does it come from? It is fabulous!
