I hate to argue, but Magneto would happily sacrifice Charles over his cause. In X-men 2, Magneto left Charles to die with Jason (Styker's son). Charles would've been dead if not the rescue of other X-men.

Make no mistake, he is definitely an antagonist, but he truly believes that he is doing the right thing for all mutants, as opposed to antagonists like Doctor Doom or the Green Goblin who are solely interested in ruling the world or causing destruction for the heck of it.

@TheLifeOnHigh I also remember in Days of Future Past he wants said to Charles all those years fighting each other Charles to have a few precious years back. Sometimes the enemy realizes that they were fighting for a false cause but when they learn to put their past differences aside and realize that mankind is important they know right then and there that they're fighting for a very different and true cause. As Shakespeare once said there is no Darkness but ignorance. You think that Magneto was filled with a heart of darkness when you realize it was only ignorance that blinded him but when you understand your pain and you understand your ignorance you can learn to either change it or accept it.

So much character depth in such a few lines. You saw the friendship, respect, regret for being in opposite sides, and adversarial nature based on ideology all in a minute and 14 seconds. Eric's comment to not get in his way was delivered perfectly. It was a threat, statement of commitment, and a heartfelt plea to his friend so they would not have to fight. Masterful acting to bring 2 fan favorites to life. Bravo!

I never realized the first time I saw this that Magneto in X-Men was the same actor who played Gandalf in Lord Of The Rings. He's so different as a villain, cold and unforgiving but you can kind of empathize with him too. He's a dignified guy who's just had enough and refuses to take any more crap.

Erik learned from humans, he learned from the Nazis. From his perspective I guess he was being human, what they can't conform they destroy. As Shakespeare once wrote: "The villainy you teach me I will execute - and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction." (Merchant of Venice Act 3 Scene 1) Charles saw what humans are capable of too but he tried to correct mankinds mistakes, so at least he'll know that he never sunk to their level.

I like the fact that Charles would always forgive Eric for his plans of mutant domination and for crippling him accidentally. See Eric, saw how the Germans treated him and many other Jews as nothing, while losing the ones closest to him just for being something different at its time. That's why Charles can feel his pain and Eric can respect Charles not just as his close friend, but as the only living family he has left to hold him from insanity. I sometimes wish that they should get a "what if" comic storyline in which both Professor X and Magneto are brothers.

Erik was also imprisoned for ten years for a crime he didn't commit. He was in solitary confinement. That's torture. You can read about its effects in wiki, but basically it drives people insane which is why is forbidden by the UN. Then his wife and daughter were killed by humans after he used his powers to save one of them. It's not just the Nazis and Auschwitz. Erik has more than enough cause to hate humans and believe peacefully coexistence was never possible. And he was right. The sentinels came ten years after this scene and killed most mutants.

Eric was right in his beliefs. The rest of the X-men series bears this out. It's a shame we don't get to see Xavier help Eric stop the inevitable before it was too late.

Erik was right, but he makes his mistakes along the way. Had he not lost the hope Charles retained, then perhaps things would've gone differently. We see that one small act in DoFP, a mutant saving NIxon, brings humanity to think differently about the issue and things turn out for the better. In the end, in the original timeline, Erik even admits his regret: "All those years fighting each other, Charles... If only to have a few of them back."

I will never forget seeing this scene in the theatre. This moment sold me on Ian McKellen as an actor. Been a fan ever since. "I will bring you hope my friend." The delivery was perfect. You knew that meant bad bad things were going to happen and there was nothing that anyone was going to do to stop it from taking place.

This is such a great scene. It is so captivating, the relationship between two old friends with deeply fundamental differences on how to resolve the major conflict. For anyone reading the original Marvel X-men comics and to get this immortalised on screen, both Patrick Steward and Sir Ian Mckennan were the best choice - this franchise plays it firmly on the ground and real, and their on screen relationship is legendary. Even watching this scene now, it's still too damned good. The framing in each scene is textbook comic-book, and the performances are dead-on. This one scene conveys the sheer weight of history between two characters/friends/enemies on opposite sides of a moral divide. Masterful.

0:44 I just noticed that the mirrors make it look like there are a lot of reflections of Magneto followed by Charles only having on reflection of himself. Possibly showing either how for every one or two people like Charles their are many more like Magneto, and how Magneto's power definitely feels more infinite compared to Charles. Or even emphasizing how Magneto envisions a world that's mostly mutant while Charles hopes to be able to share the world. Those are just some of the interpretations I get from this shot

What I always liked about the logic of this scene (headcanon) is that Magneto's presence was there to mask Mistiques infiltration of Kelly's entourage. Instead of reading everybody's surface thoughts, Prof. X became fixated on Erik (who, knowing Charles methods was thinking of anything but their mission: "oh, a handrail," "lets listen to the speech," "an escalator," etc.) who he wouldn't probe deeply in such a peaceful setting and without provocation because of their mutual respect and friendship (<--weaponized).

That's a recurring motif with Brian Singer's X-Men films. There are always X's in the background, the curtains in Xavier's office, Logan's belt buckle, etc. Nice little touch.

The irony of Magneto being embittered by his experiences in the Holocaust but then writing off the entire human race and saying “they no longer matter”. He’s too jaded by his own demons to see how close he comes to being what he hates.

@Emilie Babel I don't know if he thinks all humans are the same. I think it's more that he feels like eventually it has to be them (humans), or us (mutants). He feels like baseline humans won't just let mutants replace them, and he's right.

Notice how Erick occupies the LEFT side (0:07) leaving a space on the RIGHT side that is filled in by Xavier (0:09). In addition, Xavier sometimes appears "small" and fuzzy on the side of Erick's head (0:10), as if he were a constant subliminal presence in his head. But what leaves me doubtful, since it may be the fruit of my imagination or, on the contrary, the brilliance of the cinematographer, is that there are moments where Xavier's mediating speech gains or loses strength depending on the moment, either due to lack of arguments or because simply Xavier is not totally convinced of what he says, this is represented in his approach (0:09) and his distance (0:15); notice how "Don't give up ..." sounds so weak, said without conviction, as if he didn't believe what he's saying either, right after starting the conversation so sure of himself (0:09). Finally, the frame where Erick abandons the "anonymity" and "comes out of the shadows" (0:45) to show himself as a revelation, notice how his face occupies the same height as Xavier but how he is located a little more to the center-right ( 0:52) than his interlocutor (0:55), as if at that moment of the talk Xavier had managed to "align" Erick's thought a little more with his own thanks to the mental "intrusion" (0:38). Undoubtedly a short scene but abundant in subtext that helps us better understand the important relationship of both characters in the movie, and that lays the foundations of what we will see in later films.

Not to mention,never once does he claim or even believe himself that Charles is his enemy.Instead,he only calls him old friend,implying that he still values their friendship first over any arguements they had.
