Springsteen
Eric Church Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

To this day when I hear that song
I see you standin' there on that lawn
Discount shades, store bought tan
Flip flops and cut-off jeans

Somewhere between that setting sun
"I'm On Fire" and I'm "Born To Run"
You looked at me and I was done
But we, we're just getting started

I was singin' to you, you were singin' to me
I was so alive, never been more free
Fired up my daddy's lighter and we sang, oh

Stayed there 'til they forced us out
And took the long way to your house
I can still hear the sound of you sayin' don't go

When I think about you, I think about seventeen
I think about my old Jeep
I think about the stars in the sky
Funny how a melody sounds like a memory
Like the soundtrack to a July Saturday night
Springsteen

I bumped into you by happenstance
You probably wouldn't even know who I am
But if I whispered your name
I bet there'd still be a spark

From back when I was gasoline
And this old tattoo had brand new ink
And we didn't care what your mom would think
About your name on my arm

Baby, is it spring or is it summer?
The guitar sound or the beat of that drummer
You hear sometimes late at night
On your radio

Even though you're a million miles away
When you hear "Born in the USA"
You relive those glory days
So long ago

When you think about me, do you think about seventeen?
Do you think about my old Jeep
Think about the stars in the sky
Funny how a melody sounds like a memory
Like a soundtrack to a July Saturday night
Springsteen
Springsteen

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa

Funny how a melody sounds like a memory
Like a soundtrack to a July Saturday night
Springsteen
Springsteen
Whoa, Springsteen

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa

Whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa

Whoa, whoa, whoa

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Eric Church's song "Springsteen" reminisce about the nostalgic memories of the singer and his lover's youthful summer romance. The references to Bruce Springsteen's music and lyrics represent memories and emotions associated with their young love. The opening lines set the scene at a concert where they met, and the singer recalls his lover's appearance, including her "discount shades" and "store-bought tan." He remembers the songs playing, including "Born to Run" and "I'm on Fire." The memories of that moment are so vivid, and he thinks of her every time he hears one of Springsteen's songs.

The memories reflect the innocent and carefree nature of their relationship, including driving around in his old Jeep, stargazing, and listening to the radio. The singer feels a strong connection to his past self and refers to himself as a "gasoline" and as someone with "brand new tattoo ink" on his arm. He remembers how they did not care about others' opinions or what their parents thought of their relationship. The chorus ends with the repeated line "Springsteen," emphasizing the significance of the singer's music and the memories tied to it.

The lyric "Funny how a melody sounds like a memory" sums up the song's theme. The singer's life's memories are recalled through the music he once shared with his lover. The song is a joyful and bittersweet encapsulation of a summer romance that defines part of the couple's young lives.

Be 50 soon. I have basically lived this song. Fell in love with a girl out of highschool that didn't work out for whatever reason. But, I will say this, I'm glad it didn't. I ended up marrying someone much better and I love her so much more than anyone else I was ever with. Just when you think life has sold you short. God shows up and reminds you who's in charge of this crazy world...

@lyricmannixon1793

i understand . i ran away with this girl in the 80s numerous times . she broke my heart . i was a nice guy and girls feed off that they hurt you . not all though . i have been married 26 years and i am 50 . i have two boys who are grown and i am blessed . the Lord does give those blessings .

Thanks for sharing this. It's been more than 8 years since my high school love left me while I was in my first year in the service. It's still hard for me to get over her memory. I'm still reluctant to let it go.
