I'm Your Witch Doctor
Eric Clapton/John Mayall's Bluesbreakers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm your witchdoctor, got the evil eye,
Got the power of the devil, I'm the conjurer guy.
Gonna teach you love at the midnight hour,
Gonna feel you burning like a passion flower.

[Chorus]
Hey hey, hey hey hey, hey.
Hey hey, hey hey hey, hey.
Your witchdoctor, your witchdoctor, got my eyes on you.

I was born in the country and I lived in the trees.
I got my voodoo from the birds and the bees.
Gonna teach you love at the midnight hour,
Gonna feel you burning, little passion flower.

[Chorus]

I'm your witchdoctor, got the evil eye,
Got the power of the devil, I'm the conjurer guy.
Gonna teach you love at the midnight hour,
Gonna feel you burning like a passion flower.

[Chorus]

I've got my mean old spell on you,

I've got my mean old spell on you,
Your witchdoctor, your witchdoctor, got my eyes on you.

Overall Meaning

Eric Clapton's song "I'm Your Witchdoctor" is a classic blues rock song that was released in 1965. The lyrics deal with the persona of a witchdoctor who possesses the power of the devil and the evil eye. The witchdoctor promises to teach the object of their desire love at the midnight hour and cause them to burn like a passion flower. The whole song is narrated in the voice of the witchdoctor, who is confident with their power over the listener.

In the first verse, the witchdoctor declares their power to have the "evil eye" and the "power of the devil," suggesting they have the ability to curse and manipulate people. They are also referred to as the "conjurer guy," implying they have the skill of magic and have used it to gain power. The following lines, "Gonna teach you love at the midnight hour, gonna feel you burning like a passion flower," are eroticized, and indicate a sense of coercion and manipulation. The witchdoctor seems to be using their power and knowledge to seduce and control the person they are singing to.

The second verse is about the witchdoctor's origin, as they claim to have been born in the country and lived in the trees. They take their voodoo from the birds and the bees, the natural sources of power in their environment. This verse serves to romanticize the idea of the witchdoctor and the African origins of voodoo, which is often associated with the occult and mysticism. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus that confirms the witchdoctor's power over the person they are singing to.

How can anybody not dig this?

Here’s an excerpt of an interview about this with Page:
“When 'Witch Doctor' came to be overdubbed, Eric had this idea to put this feedback wail over the top. I was with him in the studio as he set this up, then I got back into the control room and told the engineer to record the overdub. About two-thirds of the way through, he pulled the faders down and said: ‘This guitarist is impossible to record’. I guess his technical ethics were compromised by the signal that was putting the meters into the red. I suggested that he got on with his job and leave that decision to me!”

fantastic 👌

@FeelingShred

the audacity of people to think of themselves as the governors of how music should sound, and even paid for it

@tomasvanecek8626

Right you are ! Jimmy proved his production genius on Zep albums later on.. like no one else ever could

@MerkinMuffly

Now you know why Jimmy Page was such a studio wizard and producer. He got the best out of Clapton here and they changed the way rock guitar could sound with all that reverb.
