I agree, generally. One thing I’ll say about it though is he spent a number years playing solos in his earlier years… I don’t know that he fell off so much as he just wanted to play songs more than just blues solos. I think he was looking at the quality of the melodies more than just the same old blues runs. And for me, that transition is part of why he is interesting. His 2010 album called ‘Clapton’ is one of his best, but I don’t think it’s appreciated much.
