I agree, generally. One thing I’ll say about it though is he spent a number years playing solos in his earlier years… I don’t know that he fell off so much as he just wanted to play songs more than just blues solos. I think he was looking at the quality of the melodies more than just the same old blues runs. And for me, that transition is part of why he is interesting. His 2010 album called ‘Clapton’ is one of his best, but I don’t think it’s appreciated much.

I think it has to do with experience. Lots of us I think prefer the sound of a guitar player that's right on the edge of his capabilities. Eddie Van Halen suffers from this as well. They are just to good and to full of techniques that the raw on the edge, blistering sound doesn't make it to the amps anymore.

This video really hits home to me.This how I learned how to play when I was 15 yrs old,listening to my Cream records.And because of that learning experience,my finger vibrato is second to none.I didn't realize how important it was until a few years later.I have to say,I'm thankful that I grew up when I did,from a musical stand point any way.

lol i love how at the time playing a soft blues solo was considered aggressive the most shocking thing is, if you listen to classical music, there are pieces that just tromp you down with aggression and heavines, yet no one remembers that same thing is happening with modern metal, i hope someday people would get to realize that heaviness shouldnt stop you from enjoying the shit

The only way to sound like guys from the 60’s and 70’s is to simply just get a super lead through 4x12’s and sheer volume. Which with sound men today is almost completely unachievable unless you’re playing stadiums in a “guitar led” band.

Of all the different guitars that I've heard Eric use over the years, I think that he sounded best on the SG. I do like his work with the Firebird though.

The part from 4.29 - 4.54, if I'd close my eyes and hear it again I'd belief that it was Hendrix playing. Great tone, and damn, wasn't he full of fire during this period in his life.

There was a video of the full concert on the tube a few months ago, but I can't find it. It was quite good, very well synched and reconstructed. In the beginning of the video, Clappers mumbles something into the mic, then clearly says" keep your cool" to the audience and grins. Anyone know where that is???

This concert was actually a first in terms of how the TV documentary was filmed from many perspectives such as almost the first time so many cameras were used live, and life footage being intercut with interviews and so on. Bear in mind how staid music was in London at the start of the sixties compared to the free improvisation available before the decade was out. I watched this live and had a laugh at many of the narrator's comments. Everyone became better at staging and presenting these events. Lots more to say but for example Ginger Baker was impressive, a musician I know went to audition with him but within two bars Baker knew he was not up to the required standard and walked off. There were big egos too and its amusing how the farewell concerts have mollified those kinds of clashes. Still its been fabulous seeing how things were moving back then, it felt like anythng was possible!

You are dead on. Clapton did play great at the Cream reunion show at the Royal Albert Hall. It was the best that I have seen him in years. I went to see Buddy Guy at his club here in Chicago one night and Clapton came on stage as a surprise. THAT was a great night!

You see the debate a lot: “meh, Clapton isn’t that great” vs “Clapton is the greatest of all time!”. The truth is, he was the greatest of all time, before the drugs got him. It’s great that he survived and continued. But he has never had that fire and drive he had during this time. Or the tone. He was a true phenomenon in his 20s.
