Dear Mr. Fantasy
Eric Clapton Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Something to make us all happy
Do anything take us out of this gloom
Sing a song, play guitar
Make it snappy
You are the one who can make us all laugh
But doing that you break out in tears
We wouldn't have known you all these years
The lyrics to Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood's song "Dear Mr. Fantasy" speak to the anguish and disappointment of being let down by one's own expectations. The singer implores the titular character, Mr. Fantasy, to perform for them in order to distract them from their sadness and distress. However, the song takes a more poignant turn when it reveals that Mr. Fantasy himself is struggling with his own unhappiness. Despite his ability to bring joy to others, he is unable to do the same for himself, and sheds tears when he becomes overwhelmed with emotion. The final lines of the song suggest that the singer and his compatriots would not trade their knowledge of Mr. Fantasy's struggles for anything, as it has allowed them a greater appreciation for who he truly is.

Couldn't agree with you more, been a BRUMMIE, myself he's a humble man, and never looks for recognition, respected by all true musicians and possibly the most talented out of the bunch, JACK BRUCE, CLAPTON, GINGER BAKER, JEFF BECK, as the man was a fantastic piano player. ONLY MY OWN OPINION, 👍👍👍

you're right man...have you seen him in front of the fireplace doing can't find my way home acoustic? there you can also just see the pure talent. I did however notice he tuned his guitar a full step down for that 'cause maybe his voice is a tiny bit lower 'cause of aging vocal chords or something...
