In the mid-1960s Clapton left the Yardbirds to play with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Immediately after leaving Mayall, Clapton formed the power trio Cream with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce, in which Clapton played sustained blues improvisations and "arty, blues-based psychedelic pop". After Cream broke up, he formed blues rock band Blind Faith with Baker, Steve Winwood, and Ric Grech. Clapton's solo career began in the 1970s, where his work bore the influence of the mellow style of J. J. Cale and the reggae of Bob Marley. His version of Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" helped reggae reach a mass market. Two of his most popular recordings were "Layla", recorded with Derek and the Dominos; and Robert Johnson's "Crossroads", recorded with Cream. Following the death of his son Conor in 1991, Clapton's grief was expressed in the song "Tears in Heaven", which was featured on his Unplugged album.
Clapton has been the recipient of 18 Grammy Awards, and the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. In 2004 he was awarded a CBE at Buckingham Palace for services to music. He has received four Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, including the Lifetime Achievement Award. In his solo career, Clapton has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. In 1998, Clapton, a recovering alcoholic and drug addict, founded the Crossroads Centre on Antigua, a medical facility for recovering substance abusers.

With snakeskin upholstery.
I got a charge account at Goldblatt's,
But I ain't got you.
I got a closet full of clothes,
But no matter where it goes,
It keeps a ring in the nose,
I got a tavern and a liquor store.
I play the numbers, yeah, four forty-four.
I got a mojo, yeah, don't you know,
I'm all dressed up with no place to go.
I got women to the right of me.
I got women to the left of me.
I got women all around me,
But I ain't got you.
No, I ain't got you.
No I ain't got you.
Eric Clapton's song "I Ain't Got You" is a blues rock track that speaks of a man's material possessions, but how all of these things lack importance without the one he truly desires. The first verse mentions his Maserati with snakeskin upholstery and his charge account at Goldblatt's, which are indications of his wealth and luxurious lifestyle. However, he goes on to say that despite all of this, he still longs for the person he does not have. The second verse is all about his possessions, including a closet full of clothes and even a tavern and liquor store, as well as his gambling habits. Even with all of these things around him, he is still "all dressed up with no place to go" because the one person he wants is not with him. The final verse repeats the same sentiments as the first two, with the addition of women being around him but not fulfilling the void left without the one he loves.
The song's lyrics paint a vivid picture of a man who has it all but is still lacking something meaningful in his life. The repetition and emphasis on how he does not have the one he desires highlight the importance of love and relationships over material possessions. The song's bluesy instrumentation complements the lyrics nicely, adding to the overall melancholic tone of the song.

I don't want to believe what they're telling me;
Somebody's been picking in my cherry tree.
I don't want to mistrust somebody by mistake.
Somebody's been digging 'round in my cake.
And I ain't gonna stand for it, baby.
I ain't gonna stand for it, baby.
I ain't gonna stand for it, baby, nah nah.
I ain't gonna stand for it, baby.
I ain't gonna stand for it, baby.
I ain't gonna stand for it, baby, nah nah, nah nah.
I don't want to believe what somebody said;
Somebody said somebody's shoe was under my bed.
I don't want to cause nobody no bodily harm.
Somebody's been rubbing on my good luck charm.
Oh, my my my my my my.
