In the mid-1960s Clapton left the Yardbirds to play with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Immediately after leaving Mayall, Clapton formed the power trio Cream with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce, in which Clapton played sustained blues improvisations and "arty, blues-based psychedelic pop". After Cream broke up, he formed blues rock band Blind Faith with Baker, Steve Winwood, and Ric Grech. Clapton's solo career began in the 1970s, where his work bore the influence of the mellow style of J. J. Cale and the reggae of Bob Marley. His version of Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" helped reggae reach a mass market. Two of his most popular recordings were "Layla", recorded with Derek and the Dominos; and Robert Johnson's "Crossroads", recorded with Cream. Following the death of his son Conor in 1991, Clapton's grief was expressed in the song "Tears in Heaven", which was featured on his Unplugged album.
Clapton has been the recipient of 18 Grammy Awards, and the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. In 2004 he was awarded a CBE at Buckingham Palace for services to music. He has received four Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, including the Lifetime Achievement Award. In his solo career, Clapton has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. In 1998, Clapton, a recovering alcoholic and drug addict, founded the Crossroads Centre on Antigua, a medical facility for recovering substance abusers.

And nobody's waiting by your side?
You've been running and hiding much too long.
You know it's just your foolish pride.
Layla, you've got me on my knees.
Layla, I'm begging, darling please.
Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind.
I tried to give you consolation
When your old man had let you down.
Like a fool, I fell in love with you,
Turned my whole world upside down.
Layla, you've got me on my knees.
Layla, I'm begging, darling please.
Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind.
Let's make the best of the situation
Before I finally go insane.
Please don't say we'll never find a way
And tell me all my love's in vain.
Layla, you've got me on my knees.
Layla, I'm begging, darling please.
Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind.
Layla, you've got me on my knees.
Layla, I'm begging, darling please.
Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind.
The lyrics of Eric Clapton's seminal hit song "Layla" revolve around the singer's unrequited love for a woman named Layla. The song's melancholic, heartfelt tone is established right from the first verse, where the singer contemplates the loneliness and isolation that can set in when one is devoid of a romantic partner. He implores Layla to consider the same fate, asking what she would do if nobody were standing by her side when loneliness crept in.
Throughout the song, Clapton laments his love for Layla, acknowledging that he fell for her despite the odds and his knowledge that she may not return his affections. He romanticizes the idea of being on his knees, begging for her love and approval, and expresses a desire to soothe his worried mind. The song's chorus is perhaps its most iconic feature, with Clapton's pleading voice crying out "Layla, you've got me on my knees / Layla, I'm begging, darling please / Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind."
The final verse of the song takes on a more hopeful tone, with Clapton suggesting that he and Layla make the most of their current situation before it's too late. He urges Layla not to dismiss the possibility of finding happiness together, insisting that their love is not in vain. However, the song ultimately ends in ambiguity, with no clear resolution as to whether or not the singer's love for Layla is reciprocated.
