In the mid-1960s Clapton left the Yardbirds to play with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Immediately after leaving Mayall, Clapton formed the power trio Cream with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce, in which Clapton played sustained blues improvisations and "arty, blues-based psychedelic pop". After Cream broke up, he formed blues rock band Blind Faith with Baker, Steve Winwood, and Ric Grech. Clapton's solo career began in the 1970s, where his work bore the influence of the mellow style of J. J. Cale and the reggae of Bob Marley. His version of Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" helped reggae reach a mass market. Two of his most popular recordings were "Layla", recorded with Derek and the Dominos; and Robert Johnson's "Crossroads", recorded with Cream. Following the death of his son Conor in 1991, Clapton's grief was expressed in the song "Tears in Heaven", which was featured on his Unplugged album.
Clapton has been the recipient of 18 Grammy Awards, and the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. In 2004 he was awarded a CBE at Buckingham Palace for services to music. He has received four Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, including the Lifetime Achievement Award. In his solo career, Clapton has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. In 1998, Clapton, a recovering alcoholic and drug addict, founded the Crossroads Centre on Antigua, a medical facility for recovering substance abusers.
Someone Like You
Eric Clapton Lyrics

Trying to make it to the door.
The wind was high, I didn't have much time,
Trying to find a man to score.
And then you came up on the other side
To brighten up my day.
I knew right away
[Chorus:]
Someone like you
Could make me change my ways.
Someone like you
Could turn the nights into days.
There you were, standing
On a crowded street.
You looked so good, though the air was bad,
Walking through the fog.
[Chorus]
I want to thank you, thank you now
For getting me back on my feet again.
I want to thank you, thank you now
For getting me back on my feet again.
[Chorus: x2]
The lyrics of Eric Clapton's "Someone Like You" tell a story of a person starting their day in a rush, desperate to find a man to score from. However, their day unexpectedly takes a turn when they encounter someone like the titular "you." The singer immediately recognizes the potential for this person to change their ways and possibly even turn their dark nights into bright days. The lyrics highlight the transformative power of love and the hope it can bring to even the darkest situations.
The imagery in the song is carefully crafted, with the crowded street and bad air emphasizing the bleakness of the singer's surroundings before the introduction of "someone like you." The use of "getting me back on my feet again" at the end of each verse and chorus suggests a deeper emotional struggle that the singer is facing, and the possibility that this new relationship might be just the thing they need to overcome their troubles. Overall, the song is a poignant reminder of the importance of connection, kindness, and love in our lives.
