Stone Free
Eric Clapton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every day in the week
I'm in a different city.
If I stay too long,
People try to pull me down.

They talk about me like a doll,
Talking about the clothes I wear.
They don't realize
They're the ones who're square.

And that's why
You can't hold me down.
I don't want to be down,
I got to move on, hey.

Stone free to do what I please.
Stone free to ride the breeze.
Stone free, I can't stay.
Got to, got to, got to get away.

A woman here, a woman there,
Trying to keep me in a plastic cage.
They don't realize
It's so easy to break.

But sometimes I get a -- huh.
Feel my heart kinda running hot.
It's when I've got to move
Before I get caught.

And that is why
You can't hold me down.
I don't want to be tied down.
I got to move on, hey.

Stone free to do what I please.
Stone free to ride the breeze.
Stone free, I can't stay.
Got to, got to, got to get away now.
Got to, got to, got to get away.

Stone free to ride the breeze.
Stone free to do what I please.
Stone free, I can't stay.
Stone free, I got to, got to get away.

Stone free, I'm gonna leave her right now.
Stone free, don't jump in that bed
Stone free, moving on down the highway.
Stone free, got to, got to, got to get away.

Stone free, oh yeah babe.
Stone free, bye bye baby.

Overall Meaning

Eric Clapton's "Stone Free" is a song that speaks to the singer's desire for freedom from people who attempt to drag him down. He frequently moves around from place to place, but whenever he stays for too long, somebody tries to keep him in a "plastic cage." People talk about him like he's a doll as well, scrutinizing his clothing choices. Nonetheless, he always reminds himself that it is his detractors themselves who are trapped in narrow-minded attitudes, not him. When he starts to feel trapped, he knows that he must leave. The title "Stone Free" acts as a metaphor for freedom – the desire to be released from the constraints he feels are constricting him – which is why it repeats in the chorus. He cannot be held down, as he says, "you can't hold me down," and needs to move on from his current position. Eric's words in "Stone Free" also show a sense of sexual liberation; some lines such as "a woman here, a woman there" and "don't jump in that bed" suggest that Eric views himself as a free spirit who doesn't intend to be tied down or limited by relationships.

"Stone Free" was written by Jimi Hendrix and initially recorded by the Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1966. However, Eric Clapton also released a version in 1968 as part of the Cream's Wheels of Fire album. The song's meaning might have been influenced by Hendrix, who said in a 1969 interview with Rolling Stone that it was about being "totally free" and "not having any hang-ups and about being able to do what you wanted." The story of Eric's performance of the song is fascinating. The British police were after him when he played the song during the Cream's farewell concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 1968, and they sought to arrest him at the show. Clapton evaded them by slipping into a cab and leaving before the authorities could apprehend him.

Eric is awesome. The only person I have heard take a Jimi track and make it their own is Stevie Ray Vaughn. Little Wing.
