Anyday
Eric Clapton & The Allman Brothers Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You were talking and I thought I heard you say
"Please leave me alone.
Nothing in this world can make me stay.
I'd rather go back, I'd rather go back home."

[Bridge:]
But if you believed in me like I believe in you,
We could have a love so true, we would go on endlessly.

[Chorus:]
And I know anyday, anyday, I will see you smile.
Any way, any way, only for a little while.

Well someday baby, I know you're gonna need me
When this old world has got you down.
I'll be right here, so woman call me
And I'll never ever let you down.

[Bridge]

[Chorus: x2]

To break the glass and twist the knife into yourself;
You've got to be a fool to understand.
To bring your woman back home after she's left you for another,
You've got to be a, you've got to be a man.

[Bridge:]

[Chorus: x2]

Anyday, anyday, I will see you smile.
Any way, any way, just for a little, just for a little while.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Eric Clapton & The Allman Brothers Band's song Anyday depict a conversation between two lovers. The first verse shows the woman's desire to leave the relationship, as she believes nothing can make her stay. However, the bridge presents a glimpse of hope for the relationship to flourish if they have faith in each other. The chorus reflects the singer's optimism to make the woman smile again, even if it's for just a little while. The second verse reassures the woman that the singer will be there for her through tough times. The last part of the song tells the listener that it takes perseverance and strength to fight for love.

I never met Duane Allman but I saw him play several times. Nor have
I met Derek Trucks but also have seen him several times. Gregg? Now,
there's someone I have met and interacted with and I stand by my
comment. I think Derek Trucks is a phenomenal player, one who has
taken the legacy of Duane Allman to heart and has set the bar ex-
tremely high, and he started out that way. To me, though, there was a
certain fire (as well as his soul and creativity) he brought to the band.
In the words of Reggie Jackson, he was "the straw that stirred the
drink." He and Dicky Betts were incomparable and original. I say this
NOT to criticize Warren and Derek or any other combo of guitar
players ABB has had. I love Derek's music and his playing. However,
Gregg's comment vis-a-vis Derek and Duane is just weird. But that's
his opinion and I have mine. I repeat: Without Duane there would be
no Derek, at least not the same Derek. He obviously has a boat load of
talent of his own and works at greatness continually. As did Duane,
who really set the course for Derek ... Peace, out.

I Love this Derek and The Dominoes song, I really love the way Derek and Susan do it.

I love Mr. Clapton so very much, here he had to lay it all down and let the young-uns take all the leads, , , I had this on CD and thought he took a solo too, but it turns out it's Warren playing what I thought Eric was doing.  So it shows the grace within the man to let everyone else shine.  Susan sounds heavenly with her honey-bluesy voice, husband Derek is always wonderful, my favorite guitarist right now.  Ah but it's Eric who WROTE this masterpiece, yes the masterpiece found on the classic LAYLA record, with Duane and the great backing vocals of Bobby Whitlock, love Bobby on "Thorn Tree In The Garden".

+B Wigley I saw EC live in 1977. He had a guy named George Terry playing guitar in his band. This was at a time when it was believed that the lead in Layla could only be accomplished by "God" Clapton himself. So, the song starts, but EC is nowhere to be seen. The opening Layla riffs, played by Terry, are note and expression perfect and everybody is confused. Then EC steps forward out of the shadow with a "see, any body can do it if they practice" look on his face. The message was clear: EC is the musician's musician. He is willing to share the spotlight with others - as long as the others are also top-notch players.

It's one of the few tunes on the LP that I don't think have ever been matched live. The dynamic between Clapton and Whitlock as they took turns on the vocals makes for pretty much a perfect rock-and-roll tune. The beginning of the tune has always brought to mind the receding waters before a tsunami strikes.

Duane Allman is huge on this album, too.

@randybolt1021

I think George Terry also aptly supported Stephen Stills for a period of time. Agreed, another great player who joins the greats.

@jeffreyheller5530

I had the CD as well and I too thought Clapton had the first gusto until I saw this video. Warren really sounds like him here.

@gyroshead
