hey you
Eric Clapton and Roger Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey you, out there in the cold
Getting lonely, getting old
Can you feel me?
Hey you, standing in the aisles
With itchy feet and fading smiles
Can you feel me?
Hey you, don't help them to bury the light
Don't give in without a fight.

Hey you, out there on your own
Sitting naked by the phone
Would you touch me?
Hey you, with you ear against the wall
Waiting for someone to call out
Would you touch me?
Hey you, would you help me to carry the stone?
Open your heart, I'm coming home.

But it was only fantasy.
The wall was too high,
As you can see.
No matter how he tried,
He could not break free.
And the worms ate into his brain.

Hey you, out there on the road
always doing what you're told,
Can you help me?
Hey you, out there beyond the wall,
Breaking bottles in the hall,
Can you help me?

Hey you, don't tell me there's no hope at all
Together we stand, divided we fall.

Overall Meaning

The song "Hey You" is a dialogue between two separate characters, one is longing for connection and the other one is urging the first to resist assimilation and instead resist his or her oppressors. The lyrics are delivered mostly by Roger Waters in his signature philosophical style. The first character, addressed as "Hey you," is in a state of loneliness and isolation “out there in the cold." The singer is asking if this person can feel his presence there with him. The second speaker is an authoritative figure who is explaining to the person addressed, that he should not give in and help the oppressors to "bury the light."

The second stanza of the song, which switches the identity of the person who is speaking, features a person who is isolated from society and unable to reach out to the world. This speaker is urging the listener to "open (their) heart" and "carry the stone" with him, to regain their connection with the world. One of the most memorable moments in the song arrives next when the music slows down as Waters intones: "But it was only fantasy." The line is an ironic commentary on the difficulties experienced by individuals trying to connect with other people. The final stanza returns to the original "Hey you" and explores different possible situations where connections could be made.

I personally like the sax solo, I think it adds a fresh and different touch but still retaining that roger waters feel to it that the original held.

cause roger told him to take 5.... roger has class and taste and for every song to have a guitar solo is boring.
