Once
Eric Gorfain and the Section Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once I was a soldier
And I fought on foreign sands for you
Once I was a hunter
And I brought home fresh meat for you
Once I was a lover
And I searched behind your eyes for you
And soon there'll be another
To tell you I was just a lie

And sometimes I wonder
Just for a while
Will you remember me

And though you have forgotten
All of our rubbish dreams
I find myself searching
Through the ashes of our ruins
For the days when we smiled
And the hours that ran wild
With the magic of our eyes
And the silence of our words

And sometimes I wonder

Just for a while
Will you remember me?

Overall Meaning

The Eric Gorfain and the Section song Once is a melancholic tribute to a past relationship. The first stanza of the song seems to describe the various roles the singer played in the relationship. He was a soldier, a hunter, and a lover, all in the service of his beloved. However, the final line of that stanza hints at a betrayal. The singer claims to have been a lie, perhaps suggesting that the entire relationship was based on false pretenses.

The second stanza is a wistful reflection on the past. The singer acknowledges that his former lover has probably forgotten him, but he finds himself searching for the remnants of their past. He longs for the days when they smiled and the hours that ran wild, suggesting that their relationship was once filled with passion and joy. The final lines of the song express a simple hope, that his former lover will remember him, even if it's just for a moment.

My son plays flute and getting his Masters this year. Listening to an orchestra in a great room is a Must for any producer/engineer and I totally agree with Bruce Swedien and his concepts

Excellent interview. Arguably the best of this year.

Thank you Mr Pensado for all the great information you share. :)

Rob Shaw

fantastic. So different from what we've had before but as a result, more to learn from and alternate stream of thought to follow

DeusVul7

a lot of times during ITL, dave uses some kind of plugin or fx chain that makes whatever it's working on much louder. My concern is that 'louder' is always perceived as better but that makes it really hard to tell what exactly the plugin is doing -> is is just making things louder? for instance, the use of Nectar on these vocals -> 3db or more louder than the original - how can you judge it fairly?

Great episode guys!!

I'd love to see Adam Young on here- he has an interesting perspective on the music industry and talks /painfully little/ about how he works in the studio

Worked with Eric for a bit! Miss that guy and his passion for adding flavor to some already tasty tunes!
