Sermon is best known as one half of the late-1980s/1990s hip-hop group EPMD. He began recording solo albums for Def Jam in 1993.
In 1997, he rejoined EPMD. The following year, Sermon, Keith Murray and Redman recorded a cover version of "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang, the first hit hip-hop record. EPMD disbanded a second time in 1998. In 2000, Sermon moved over to J Records, and released the album Music the following year. The title track (a Top 40 pop hit that also made it to #2 on the R&B music charts), featured guest vocals from late soul music legend Marvin Gaye, culled from unreleased recordings which Sermon reportedly found in a small record shop in London. React was released in 2002.
In 2003, J Records dropped Erick Sermon due to poor record sales. However, he still went on to establish his Def Squad imprint with Motown Records. At this time, he recorded an album, Chilltown, N.Y., which was released a year later in 2004. The album was powered by the single "Feel It" (which contained a sample of Reggae/R&B Singer Sean Paul), a song which became a moderate success in the United States. In an interview, he stated that he was going to step aside and try to get upcoming artists in the spotlight.
However, Sermon hasn't stopped doing music altogether, as he has produced the song "Goldmine" on Busta Rhymes' album, The Big Bang in 2006. Very soon after, Sermon recorded "Don't Make No Sense" with Def Squad.
Sermon joined up again for a special EPMD worldwide tour in 2006, were he was being held company by Keith Murray among others.

have some sex
safe sex
word 'em up
okay, it's time for some action
a little passion, some booty waxin'
for the bozac, make sure he's strapped
call up a few people on the phone
yo we're havin' a party, at my private home
some bring some chronic, plus some brew
call up your girl and invite her too
come active and bring purple lactives
'cause we're gonna get more busy than gymnastics
and do the humpty hump all night
so when you come with the boy, make sure you're right
it's nine o'clock, party starts at ten
so enough for now, I'll talk to you then
later, huh, I'll see you when you get here
and make it quick, ah yeah
time for some safe sex
[Chorus]
safe sex
safe sex
safe sex
we all need (safe sex)
ding dong, there goes the bell
I opened up the door and oh, what the hell
it was a buncha niggas standin' by my door
I said come in, but respect my floor
that means take off your shoes and englands
'cause I'm a gentleman, some say distinguished
all of y'all put your things up in the kitchen
and the rest of y'all sit down and listen
be free and relax in what you're wearin'
let's all be happy like Bobby McFerrin
and get loose and produce the funky juice
and let's swing this shit like they swing a forty deuce
they want some reggae, like some flex
time to have sex
and it's all night, so turn off the light
and let's get high as a kite
and have safe sex
[Chorus]
somebody say sex (sex)
say safe sex (safe sex)
I love it (I love it)
I need it (I need it)
but for real, when you're havin' sex
no matter what type, make sure you wear the latex
to all of the cons out there sexin'
stop and look, boy, you're stressed out protection
cause aids is real and something to believe
or not make-believe and fake like hair weave
a death wish like Charles Bronson
and if you don't believe me then ask Magic Johnson
about the sex
[Chorus]
The lyrics of Erick Sermon's song Safe Sex revolve around the importance of having protected sex to avoid sexually transmitted infections and diseases. The song starts with Erick explaining that it's time for some action with a little passion, and booty waxing followed by the importance of making sure to be strapped while having sex. There is also an emphasis on inviting people over for a party and to have alcohol and marijuana available for the guests. Erick advises everyone to practice safe sex and wear protection before indulging in any sexual activity. When the party starts, everyone is asked to feel free and relaxed, be happy and let loose, but make sure to practice safe sex.
The chorus constantly repeats the importance of safe sex to the listeners. Throughout the song, Erick emphasizes the message by comparing sex without protection to a death wish like Charles Bronson. He also refers to basketball legend Magic Johnson, who was diagnosed with HIV, reinforcing his message that having unprotected sex can lead to devastating consequences.
