Erika de Casier was born in Portugal to a Belgian mother, and a Cape Verdean father. She attended Catholic school as a child, and at the age of eight, she and her family moved to Aarhus, Denmark. She has stated that she was a target of bullying due to her and her brother being the only black students at her school. She spent time painting throughout her adolescence. At age 16, she spent a year living with a host family in the United States. Upon returning to Denmark, she joined her school's choir and band and began producing her own beats. After graduating from school, she moved to Copenhagen. Before performing as a solo artist, she worked at a kindergarten.
Erika de Casier initially made her mark as an ally of the Regelbau collective (home to Danish house acts DJ Sports, C.K and Central). The debut album Essentials was written and released through her own Independent Jeep label in 2019. Co-produced by de Casier and Natal Zeks (aka El Trick), the LP graced the 'Best of the year' lists at Mixmag, Gorilla vs. Bear, FACT, Dummy, and Crack Magazine. The slow-burn success story of the album gained the attention of British label 4AD, which signed de Casier in 2020, and released the sophomore 'Sensational' on the 21st of May 2021. The singer, songwriter and producer went to perform at some of the biggest festivals in the world; as well and writing for pop-stars (NewJeans), and lending her voice to hyped dance-tracks (Mura Masa, Shygirl).
Returning with Zeks, the co-producer of Essentials and Sensational, de Casier added to the fold collaborators; Jonathan Jull Ludvigsen, Carl Emil Johansen, Niels Kirk, Christian Rhode Lindinger, Nick León, Kirsten Nyhus Janssen and Tobias Sachse; adding live drums, synths, guitar, bass to the third album Still released on 21st February 2024.
Puppy Love

Blue as the sky
Such a distraction.
Uh, did you know I've been looking at you
Like you are perfection holding me so tight,
But wait a minute, I
Have a lot of questions what's your
Favourite color and - are you a gemini?
Uh - is true that you never loved anyone but me?
"Yeah"
You never ever done that, and you've never looked at anyone but me?
"Yes"
I'm glad to hear it, it's really nice,
Now do you have anything to tell me?
"Yeah,
I will love you forever and ever and ever and ever and ever"
You're so sweet
Put your butterflies around me And you can
Call it puppy love 'cause you know real love
Is just as naïve
You're so sweet
Put your butterflies around me
And you can call it puppy love 'cause you know real love
Is just as naïve
Uh, look in your eyes
In Erika de Casier's "Puppy Love," the singer is enamored with a person whose eyes are "blue as the sky," finding them to be distraction and perfection itself. They ask their love interest some questions, such as their favorite color and whether they are a Gemini. They also ask if the person has ever loved or looked at anyone besides them, to which the answer is no. In response, the singer exclaims how glad they are to hear this news and that the other will love them "forever and ever/and ever and ever/and ever." The singer likens their love to "puppy love," a type of innocent, naive affection, surrounded by "butterflies" and not yet matured to "real love."
Despite the song's simple premise, the lyrics pack a whimsical yet earnest punch with their mention of butterfly imagery and playful romantic questions. The singer's love interest sentimentally assures them that their adoration is pure and true, which elicits a relieved, grateful response from the singer. Erika de Casier's contemplative style in "Puppy Love" is indicative of the artist's other works, where she ruminates on the complexity of emotions in a gentle, minimalist way.
