Sudden Rush

As I realise it's you
Like a river in a droughtful season
How cool you didn't call
Initial hint of disappointment
The mirror of my smile
That isn't there, that doesn't follow
A very causal 'hi'
Why did you come at all,
If it wasn't for me?
Another blow of resignation
When realise I do
Now in your hands
The book you borrowed
The whole way we first met
Comes together in my head,
When the picture's clear you've left
The song "Sudden Rush" by Erlend Øye depicts the feelings of excitement, disappointment, and resignation that arise from an unexpected encounter with someone you used to know. In the first stanza, the singer expresses his sudden rush of expectation upon realizing that the person approaching him is someone he knows. The comparison to a river in a droughtful season emphasizes how rare and significant this encounter is to him. However, the excitement is short-lived as he realizes that the person did not call him, leading to an initial hint of disappointment.
The second stanza reveals the singer's further disappointment as he sees that his smile in the mirror doesn't follow through. His casual "hi" reflects the awkwardness and uncertainty of the moment. The line "Why did you come at all if it wasn't for me?" expresses his confusion over the other person's intentions. Finally, he comes to a realization that the encounter is not what he hoped for, bringing another blow of resignation.
The last stanza brings closure to the encounter as the other person hands back a borrowed book, triggering memories of the whole way they first met. The picture becomes clear as the person leaves, emphasizing a finality to the encounter.
Overall, "Sudden Rush" captures the complex mix of emotions that arise from unexpected encounters with people from our past.
